Thinking of playing WoW... advice please

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of going back to WoW, I played it a few years ago but never really got into it and didn't really get past level 10.

Now summers over I want to get into a game and thought this might be a good option.

Just wanted a few tips like:

What is the best server to go on, I lean towards the PVE side of things.

Where is the best place to get all the patches as it going to take me hours to update.

Any any other bits of advice you would like to offer :p

Hayley

for the love of god stay away from pvp and pvp servers as they are were all zthe retards are at, you know the pople who just behave like complete and utter 'A'Holes for no reason and then make up a bad reason for the way they are acting.
Ok rant over, anyway i play on the EU server "Darkspear" lots of great guilds horde and alliance alike but you will find a few "A" holes as it is WoW but in general its a good friendly atmosphere.

hope that helped.

Well I had a little play around on Darkspear with a few classes and have decided to stick with the mage as I feel more comfortable playing something I know.

Found it to be petty quiet but that may be because I'm in the lowbie area? I don't have the newest expansion do most people level in an area from that?

Don't

It is a time vampire you will never be able to tame.

It will seduce you with pretty presents and talk of bright future but over time it will cloud your mind and blot out the ration. For the love of elderon, fight this spell and brake free from the oppression.

I wish you well my dear friend and I wish you time.

No at last check all the lowbie areas were present in the original game except perhaps for the blood elf/draenei areas which you needed TBC for I think. Lowbie areas typically will be lower populated, and I imagine most people will be levelling in dungeons as well going up so you probably won't see too much population until you get to 80.

I'd suggest hitting some of the realm stat pages and seeing which servers have better populations. I also played on a PvE server back in the day because I found the community better/preferred not being bothered too much by PvP whilst questing/grinding.

Argh, what is it with some people here? Just because you can't handle the addictiveness! The OP wants to play WoW and is asking for some links and advice. Who are you to tell him not to?

With regards to this I think it's fair warning. A lot of people have become addicted to this game, myself included. Just pointing out that it can be a problem and I'm sure a lot of people who think they aren't addicted probably are in reality. The whole game is basically designed to make you want to sink time into it, get the next item, complete the next quest, kill the next boss. The only reason I kicked the habit was because I got bored of it in the end.

Sharpy used to play L4D with us a lot and after a while he was instead spending all his time playing WoW and we never saw him again!

OP can of course play the game if they want to, I just advise against starting if you think it may become too addictive. It's very hard to pick this game up and just drop it when you need to as well. If I need to go do something in the middle of a game of BFBC2 I can just quit, in WoW if I was raiding or doing a dungeon I basically couldn't.

Except Bears are probably the easiest tank class both to play and to gear (can be a tad boring though) and being a tank automatically means easy access to raids and dungeons.
i found druid tanking horrible and hard to keep threat compared to my paladin which was a breeze just strolling in and laughing as i walked to the boss

Maul, swipe, lacerate, growl, faerie fire. All ya need, none of this 696 rotation poop. My advice would be to try resto at first, people are rude up until 70 ~ 80 and pull because they are arrogant twinks which does bear tanks no good as they generate rage from hitting and dodging (talent).

Plus if you can step out of the tanking role quickly by switching to cat form and still have ok dps if the situation requires it.

Not to mention the flight form and movement speed bonuses :> I love being out to jump of water and fly off instantly.

i was already 80 on my druid, i leveled as feral and until the feral nerf i used to be best dps in naxx :(

i tried to tank some hc's with the proper spect and just found it a pain keeping aggro on multiple mobs switching target all the time to try and gain more aggro on each one of they would run after someone aoeing etc.

on pld it was so easy i dont know how people can tank as druid i cdidnt find it fun at all and i had really good feral gear at the time

I just take the approach: you pull it you deal with it. If someone manages to aoe off you, it's because they started too soon. If you get in there and roar to lower their ap then start swiping, you should generate much more threat unless your in 4k gear vs some stupid dk in 6k and doing death and decay.

I find against multiple trash mobs that charge is pretty much useless. Also remember to get the glyph of maul (your maul hits 2 targets in front of you for the same amount of normal maul damage).

The best part about bear tanks for is Swipe. You spam it and that's it. Paladins and Death knights have fixed area long running group pull spells which is no good if a incoming mob goes by or around it (or the best I've seen a paladin run away from their own consecration).

Between the amount of fairly spammable AoE's and the reactive damage from holy shield (not to mention having most of your damage as holy means it ignores armour) means pally tanks just generally have easy time with holding agro.
Where they fall over is when adds come due to all their abilities being on a cooldown, bears on the other hand just spam swipe (its a filler ability on single target tanking anyway) and generally manage to collect anything that runs past.

One thing i will say, as good as swipe is it's definately not strong enough to hold agro on its own against 2-3 dps aoeing. Druids still require the old fine art of tab targetting and mauling.

To me the worse thing with being a feral druid is the fact you never actually get to see your shiny gear when your actually putting it to use since you're never in caster form in a raid/group. Bit of a irony really since over the course of Wotlk Druids have had some of the better looking tier sets.

I have a bear tank and paladin tank, similiar geared (basically full 264 gear) and i prefer tanking on my druid. Maybe i just suck at playing paladin, but feels like my single target threat is far better on my druid compared to paladin even when using 696 rotation.

Aoe tanking, well paladin with soc is kinda easy but still dont have issues with aoe threat.

Lol, just checked out the ratio on my server and its 7,223 (1 / 0.23) (Horde / Alliance)

hey i play on darkspear if you need any help with anything just whisper my priest pookz or lock xoq :) if your alliance ofc.

I have been playing wow for the past year or so and it has sucked my soul!! as many of the other posters here say, DONT DO IT!!!;)

Cheers I might do that... I'm on a trial account at the moment until blizzard sort out merging my old account with battle.net. After complaining about not being able to merge they sent me an email saying mine had been hacked and I have to give them loads of info to get it back!

I'd echo the "don't do it" posts in all honesty.
The game itself isnt bad but 95% of the community WILL make you want to commit mass genocide. Just seems to attract complete ****'s.

I played on Shadowsong (EU) for a few years which is considered to be one of the best as far as mature community goes but even there it began to slip into retardom.

im looking for a new server for cataclysm

i have taken the advice of some peeps on here and rolled on Argent Dawn EU.

I have made a char on both alliance and horde to see what both factions are like.

im very very very casual at this point imho, waiting for cata.

if the server is good ill roll my worgen druid and goblin (not so sure yet) on it

Really? Because after playing a while as bear in decent gear doing 80 heroics, I've found most groups get really annoyed having a druid tank, as the bear lacks some decent aggro-holding skills for certain pulls here and there.
This has even been when I've not been tanking and another druid has. I've also never been in a 70 or 80 raid group that picks a druid as the tank, in favour of another tank class like paladin or warrior. In fact, every ICC raid I've seen has chosen pally tank always. Never been offered or never seen anyone else offered ;p.

Ah well, I still wouldn't suggest it as bear. Sure, easy raids..but I don't see why so many people say this.

Even as DPS only, it takes a maximum of an hour to get into a dungeon at almost any level. What's the problem with this? If you played before the dungeon finder...it would take you 6-7 hours standing in a city asking for a group as any of the dungeon triangle. Also, with dungeon finder you can always do some quests or make some gold whilst you're waiting to join. I did.
