Thinking of returning my card

snap

idling at 63c with a dual monitor setup peaks low 90's in games with 100% load

just to add after a quick reposition of pcs under my desk (moved the server over a bit my idles now dropped down to 57c on a dual monitor setup :)

Ofc it is! It's not running as it should - therefore faulty. Any helpful posts please?

Does it play games? Yes.

Running as it should.

You simply can't return it because its a little warmer, it's unfair to the company - the temps could be due to anything. Your ambients, your case airflow, the variation on the TIM on the GPU, anything. Just set a higher fan profile and be done with it.. jesus christ lol.

Edit; Probably a little aggresive on the tone of my post but I'm simply dumbfounded at the reason you claim its 'faulty'..

The guy you quoted may have lower temp, but did he mention anything about custom fanspeed profile? He could be running the cooler fan at 80% speed and use a headset for all we know...

He was talking about his idle temps and he clearly states he's at 20% fan.

The main difference seems to be the dual monitor issue with the core clock running at 500mhz when in dual monitor. I wonder if that is changeable or will be changeable in the future....

Anyone know how I can monitor my temps whilst ingame with single monitor?

GPU - Z 0.5.0 i am using to monitor the temps you can set it to record max temp for the gpu also fan speed the same way.
its under the downloads tab , also a step by step guide on how to flash a 6950-> 6970 if anyones interested in having a go

Some of you guys really are quite tetchy aren't you? YOU may not return it for being warmer but I would - the product is not performing as it should and it is my decision, jesus christ lol.

As it stands, you ignored my consequent posts that I have found out the cause for higher idle temps (being the 2nd monitor) but just felt like having a pop like a sad little fanboy - grow up. If you can't be helpful, don't post, it's very easy.

AAH PERFECT, think I've got that somewhere already! Thanks for the heads up Andy.

btw: there is already a sticky on the flashing.

ATI purposely set dual monitor setups to idle at 500mhz as the standard single monitor idle clocks caused nasty flickering on the second display. Not sure whether it's changeable or whether you'd want to for that matter, it'd probably drive you to distraction and 54C idle temp won't seem such a bad thing. :)

Thanks Mr Mustard. When did they do that? My 4890 used to run at 350mhz and it made no difference to temps being dual or single monitor. Hey-ho if that's what happens with these cards then that' what happens with these cards.

Not sure exactly when they implemented this it but I remember getting a 5850 back in March, trying to run my monitor and TV from it at the same time and getting flickering, so some time between March and now I'd guess. :p

How long have you had it wu ?
I'd send it back under DSR mate
Send it back faulty all they will do is test it and return it to you stating the cards do run hot
Pay the postage and DSR it if your not happy

Had for a day mate.

I need to do some more digging/testing.

The idle temps seem to have been solved (being due to second monitor) just need to monitor (excuse the punn) my ingame temps on single monitor.

What you say makes sense to me though and I agree with the logic. how long do I have for DSR generally?

You have 7days
But
Tbh wu the cards just run hotter and other cards as long as it's not overheating and hitting the max temp ( not sure what it is ) I'd keep it
Setup a decent fan profile and crank to antecs fans up a bit.
But if your not happy that's a different story, had a case of being graphics card unhappy 3weeks ago and ended up dsr'ing

Hi mate,

Congratulations on finding out the problem. Now hopefully you can either accept the downfall of this problem or DSR and try a different card if need be.
