Thinking of returning my card

My HIS 6970 idles at 38 with the case side back on !:p

Yeah your single monitor right or more than one monitor? We've figured out that's making the massive difference.

Just done another temp log with both monitors on whilst playing with my side panel back on too (for both logs).

Averaging 88-90 with fan at about 38%.

This is fine tbh I'll manually increase fan to 45-50% when gaming and that should keep it to about 75c which is fine.

Unless drivers change much I do think aftermarket cooler will be a must-have for the 6970s I just wonder what kind of temps I'd get if I overclocked it to 950 or 1000mhz, do you know what I mean?

With the 6970 I would say it is two steps forward, one step back :D

i sent my 5850 back yesterday, arrived faulty, they got it today and sent a replacement out today, am i entitled to my postage back?

Yes because it was faulty. Just ask for it in the Customer Support forum, they have done it for me previously.

Sorry to hear about this mate, it's a bit of a bummer but if you don't game on multi screens then would you find disabling the second screen when playing too much of a hassle?. It's the only way I can see it not being as much of a problem for you but if you do use both screens for gaming then it's going to give out more heat and noise from the fans to counter it.

Yeah if you overclocked now you'd be pushing it due to the temps you've been getting. As there is a shutdown protection temperature threshold, it wouldn't be so bad to test it if you are willing to keep the card.

P.S Just ordered my i3 and 6950, should be here tomorrow. I have someone at OCuK trying to make sure my order leaves tonight. If not then I'll get it Tuesday, happy days. :)

I think I'll leave it as is for now (unless something changes) because lots of ppl who also have the 6970 are saying they idle at 62c etc too (due to dual monitors or tri-monitors).

TBH yeah I need my second monitor because I'm used to having it now :D

It just means I'll keep the fan set to 30% when not ingame and 45%-50% when gaming to keep it at the 80c mark or mid 70s.

I will think about overclocking it when aftermarket cooler comes out tbh. This fan is so damn loud.

I believe the 6950 is quieter unless you do the flash then u pump up the fan so it's the same? I could be wrong but nice setup - good luck with delivery.

So if it idles at 250mhz on a single monitor & 500mhz on 2 monitors, does it go up to 750mhz on a 3 monitor setup? Interested as I am thinking about trying eyefinity.

allow me to post my finding that might help the 10 thrads a day you make :p

With dual monitors idle: 58c load: NO IMPACT

single montor idle 38c load: massivly game dependant for some reason?

Wow load :85c lfan auto room temp 22.5c
Dow2 load :93c fan auto room temp 22.5c
Cod 2 load :71c fan auto room temp 22.5c
Killing Floor load :68c fan auto room temp 22.5c
BFBC2 load :80c fan auto room temp 22.5c

massive differance as you see, hope it helps

Well at least the problem has been verified and you've came to a conclusion so you can now enjoy some games maybe?. :D

Yeah it will be a little loud for you at times but at least this should stop when an aftermarket cooler comes and then your temps may plummet also.

Yeah the 6950 wouldn't be putting out as much heat before the flash so I agree.

Thanks, no shipping email so Tuesday it is. I'll just get hammered tonight instead :D.

Mine has peaked at 98c - what do you idle at though? I'm idling at 54c with fan control on auto which is madness....
When idling at 54c, what % is your fan at - EDIT, read the whole thread now and see results are dependant on number of monitors. That's quite annoying, because switching off the second monitor doesn't help, I presume you need to disconnect it (which is a hassle)?

Thanks very much for this - it helps a lot. You have to understand that until this and others posted too, the only people who had posted were getting lower temps in either the exact same rig as me and one guy was in a small HTC case.

I know you were (kind of) joking but I didn't create that many threads on it - two I believe and they were asking very separate things.

But thanks again for your info.

@Trigaaar - yes I would but I'll just leave my fan at like 35% which leaves the card at about 48c. Then pump it up to 50% when gaming - can't live without 2nd monitor now....

@J.D Yeah mate, I think aftermarket cooler will have to be done, especially if I overclock to 1000mhz levels or beyond for me the fan is just silly unless I'm alone at anything above 55% really. It's a mad fan.

Been playing my games and very happy - playing BC2 maxed out with no problems which is great stuff and what it was all for.

Yeah was only messing mate, one thing to remember about others people temp on here is 50% of the time they are full of $hit. Dont know why people do it but they think by giving uber cool air cooled temp they are pro or makes there set up look good
You soon learn who full of it around here and you can make your own mind up, back on topic mind i belive i read that 10.12a are compatible drivers for us to use, we have no optimized yet so in theroy when there out we should maybe see a difference.

I came from 5870 xfire and i used my custom cooling profile for them on the 6970 it didt go above 80c in any game with but the fan at 45% can be heard over headphones so not ideal :)
