I said run it properly, which in my mind would include a decent specialist. - You can easily cut corners, but I would'nt want to on such a car.

Price up a full exhaust system, exchange gearbox, engine etc etc etc Not cheap for an M3.

My point is the M3 isn't an average run of the mill Bm, far from it. Its running costs can (but often arn't) be astronomical.

All well & good spending £20k on a car (or £8 -£9k) to then find no spare funds for unforseen disasters isn't it?

FWIW, the M3 will trounce quite a few (older) Ferraris. :p

£20k running costs for an M3?

No way dude, no way.

So you reckon if you bought an M3 for 2 years you'd need to be able to buy it twice to run it?

So its going to cost £10,000 a year to run?

Pull the other one, it's got bells on :p

Your missing my point, whats the point of running a car that could potentially price itself off the road if something major breaks?

If you could afford it twice, I'd guess the financial aspects of such an event would'nt be an issue, in which case fine, go buy it.

If on the other hand, your stretching just to buy the car in the first place, then ,imo, your just asking for a financial disaster later on, if your unfortunate. ;)

I'm not saying the M3 will cost you £20k to run, I'm just saying, potentially, it could cost one hell of a lot ,which isn't a good idea on a limited budget, is it?

Can you afford to go and fit a new engine and gearbox in your 728i if they both died right now?

If push came to shove, YES !

Not that I would mind, the car's value would'nt warrant it.

All depends on what Bes (the o/p) earns I suppose?

If his income matches a £20k budget then I'd guess he won't have an issue with running it, if not, I'd be careful.

Whilst I dont completely agree with the 'afford to buy it twice' idea, if you are unlucky and get a dog or friday afternoon car, once you look at things like : clutch, exhaust, suspension replacements, brakes, tyres, servicing, depreciation, fuel costs then you could come quite close to 10K.

He's just trying to state that you can't run /M cars on a shoestring.

Yeah, but it won't be that different to my 330d.

aah stop! stop! You're tempting me too much!!

Did you buy second hand? If so, can I ask how much and how many miles it had when you purchased?

Ok been looking at the 330i thing- it seems £12- 13K would secure me a very nice 330i. More than I wanted to spend, but it gives me something to think about.

Now I have to decide if I actually DO want to sell my Leon. As I said I have had quite a few things go wrong, but do you think the following list is enough to justify selling it?

CV boot needed replacing £40

Throttle body needed cleaning as it kept stalling £40-60
Central convenience chip bust (Basically all the electronics stopped working properly) £361

Climate control system started rattling (Faulty recirc motor) and horrendous squeaking bootlock (caused by water leaking into the inside of the tailgate door) £271.50

And now damp rear footwells- suspected faulty seals but I have heard stories on the Seat forums of it costing around £500 as other bits have needed replacing to fix the problem- I can't recall what at the moment but I can look it up) Guessing if its just the seals I am talking at least £50 if I fix myself.

So we are talking in the region of £800, rising to well over a grand if the dampness in the rear is worse than just a faulty seal! All this has happened in the 20 or so months I have owned the car. Do you reckon it is enough to warrant getting rid?

The fact it is a Seat Leon and not a 330i is enough to justify selling it.

I hired a brand new Seat Ibiza when in Spain recently, I must admit a was very impressed with its build quality and lack of rattles / squeakes etc.

Still, it was no BMW though. :p

It was £12k when I bought it in february. It had 97k on the clock and was 3yrs, 3 months old, full Sytner BMW service history. Just clocked over the 100k mark :)

Well I've been having a look around the trader and My God I'm tempted to get a 330i now- they just scream value for money (if I spend around £12- 13K)

I've also just cheked on Direct Line and the insurance would work out at a bit over £740 for me \o/ which is £800 LESS than my modified Leon costs at the moment and about the same as I expect to pay next year!!

I already have the mentality to drive one as I have a tendancy to forget my car has indicators, so perhaps I should go for it?!

Can anyone give me a rundown of the servicing costs?

Thanks
