This Instant And Moment - 2025!

but I draw the line of risk getting ill for a few quid of cheese (or anything) that’s gone off.

There isn't a risk from hard cheese if you cut the mould off. It is safe. Just as safe as any cheese without visible mould.

In general, I agree, but hard cheese is an exception.

I'm a bit funny about mould, if something has mould on it I will not eat it at all, it doesn't matter what it is. If it is something that is in a pack of multiple, I likely won't eat the others either...
If something is past its use by date I will still eat it if it seems okay, but sometimes I think things fail the sniff test because I'm paranoid and not because they have actually gone bad.
Most blue cheeses I struggle with because I don't like when you get a bit that tastes strongly of the mould, which does happen occasionally....

But St Agur blue cream cheese is divine, its all blended up so you don't have that problem. :D

Out of interest, does that mean you don't eat blue cheese at all?

I don't eat blue cheese at all.

Not because I am against the mould in it, I know it is safe, it is because of a past incident. I can still remember it.

Rewind back in when I was 22/23, I was in Brighton for 1 day to find accommodation for next year and I was at the Student cafe and saw a Bacon and Stilton baguette (I hadn't eaten for like 8hrs at this point since breakfast). Knowing only Stilton is a cheese but not what kind of cheese...I bought it and proceeded to start eating it outside.

I still remember the feeling of "Why does this taste so bad?" and the involuntary feeling wanting to vomit. I took a 2nd bite thinking I would just get to like it more....nope....my body wanted to spit it out. I was very hungry at the time, no time to eat and also paid a lot for the baguette.....so I took out all the Stilton from the baguette and just ate the ham with the bread.....tasted awful but I was too hungry not to eat anything.

Since then I just won't touch blue cheese. Besides the fact that I am mildly lactose intolerant.

That's pretty fair, such a bodily reaction means you probably shouldn't push it!

I will happily pick mouldy bits off bread and eat the rest, if it's my last slices and there's nothing else around. Within reason! But I am well aware that a childhood of eating off the floor and not washing my hands has hardened me a bit. I wouldn't try and take the same risks feeding other people.
