This mother tereza **** needs to stop.

I will always be a Windows user but Ive long since concluded that for people not cued up on things who are always getting in trouble - spend the money and get a Mac.

I have a lot of admiration for that OS even though its not really my thing.

Anyone find that a small, simple job often turns into a massive problem, requiring hours and hours of tedious problem solving?

Read through this thread yeasterady and ironcally got called up to help someone with their computer shortly after. Only thing i needed to do was move an ssd and power supply to another computer but somehow managed to break the ssd in the process...so angry as it obviously my fault but something that could have been avoided if i said no to fixing the computer in the first place!

I hate that. because you don't really want to be doing it, you rush it, and 9/10 something always goes wrong and you end up spending more time than you needed to on it.

Tis usual to not ask a favour from a friend if it falls within the domain of what they'd consider work.

Like if your friend is a solicitor its likely not an issue for you to ask him to help you for an afternoon moving stuff into your new house, if he's your best mate he's probably already offered. Conversely if you'd asked him to spend the same amount of time doing conveyancing in order for you to buy the house he'd be a bit miffed and probably consider your request to be incredibly rude.

People tend to ignore this sort of social convention when it comes to IT - perhaps they've got it into their head that all IT problems can be solved by a few keystrokes as portrayed in movies etc...

This is very true.

I have to admit theres one or two friends whom I dont mind helping at all. One of them....sigh....she is so scatter-brained. Heart of gold but always messing up her Acer. One day she managed to wipe the entire disk. Got her stuff back with a LiveCD. She is a rare breed though, knowing I will refuse pay she has always sneakily put cash in my jacket pocket or left it in the car glovebox.

The best way ive found is to sit infront of thier computer and say "i havnt a clue whats wrong with it" and send them packing to the Purple shirt people.

That in its self should be enough to stop them downloadign rubish on to thie computers.

Keep helping them and they WILL keep doing it.

This hehe

I've done this several times at work...

Since IT isn't my job but I'm now got a rep for fixing software problems :(

"ask john he'll help?"

Ask what other professional service they can offer in return. Like 'Hey, I dont suppose you can defend me in court next week with your legal expertise' or 'Would you mind doing my tax returns for me this year? Thanks'.

I get customers coming in all the time asking for a bit of quick technical advice and then it turns into something longer than 5 minutes, and they expect more to be free.

What ticks me off the most is when they think it's a quick and easy thing, and when you tell them to wait or come back another time because you are busy, they get really p*ssed off. Like their emails stopped coming through on their phone. I mean wth, it's just email. You can check it later at work/home!

Yet when they have a potentially troubling medical problem, they go to the doctors and are happy to comply when asked to come back with an appointment next week or asked to wait in reception 30 minutes to see a doctor.

Some people need to check their priorities again!

"Your computer is broken? Well you can take it to these guys at NAME OF COMPUTER REPAIR SHOP."
"Me? Sorry, I won't be able to do that."
"No, I think it's best if I don't do it because I am not comfortable taking money off friends/family."
"Hahahah. Do it for free? Hahahahahhaha."
