This shouldn't break my speakers?

Yes, you could push the drivers beyond thier excursion limit, causing mechanical damage to the woofers. Additionally, it'll be easy to overload the amp this way and push it into clipping, which can damage the tweeters as well! Since you heard a horrible noise it could be either/both, probably over excursion. Speakers won't cope with indefinite amounts of bass, a lot of older ones have minimal excursion as well. A lesson learned I guess :(

Yeah, very easy to overdrive speakers with tests like that. Turning the bass up will have made things considerably worse. And I can't believe you killed one of the speakers then decided to do the crazy thing again on the other one :(

You need a decent qual sub m8.. like the BK XLS200 sub,, because a sub can deal with bass much better then your speakers can, plus it takes some of the workload off the speakers

My Dad hooked some old smaller and less powerful JVC ones. I'm not to go over half power on the amp or I'll probably blow them. :P He is looking for some second hand speakers for me, what would you recommend? Just two speakers, I like bassy music though. ;)

Haha, that old tune.

Used to use that years ago when I was testing pc speakers like the creative 5700 and my last pc speakers the Z5500. Never had any problems, you must have really gone overboard :D
