Well, obviously, because guns are legal there.

What is the overall murder rate, that's all that matters.

The US still fairs pretty badly if you look at overall murder rates. Over twice that of Israel, four times that of the UK and ten times the rate of Japan.

Picture of Commander J D Russell trapped in his aircraft moments before it sinks, resulting in his tragic death(1958)

The aircraft piloted by Commander J D Russell coming in to land on HMS Victorious in the Solent, Hampshire, it touches down, hooks onto the arrester wires which then fails and the plane then rolls along the deck into the sea.

A rescue helicopter tried to lower a man down to try and help Commander Russell, but the waves lap over the cockpit and the aircraft sinks.

You Tube Commander J D Russell for the video.

The Earth pictured from 3.7 billion miles away by the Voyager 1 space craft as it was leaving the solar system.

That tiny little dot represents everything humanity has achieved and Earth's billions of inhabitants. When you see it in such a way it makes all your problems seem so small when you realise how small and insignificant you are in the grand scheme of things.

This was taken in 1936 during the great depression. She is Florence Owen. She was a farm worker, driving around California trying to get work, but her car had broken down. She and her children were waiting in a workers camp for car to be fixed. Journalist took her picture which came to represent the poverty of migrant workers of the time

    Some great Sagan vids.

His books are amazing, he's a natural writer & has a way with words I've yet to come across in any other literature.

This one is my personal favourite, about the evolution of stars & planets & ultimately us (by the creation of heavy elements & oxygen).

It's such an truly awesome realisation knowing that the evolution of the universe isn't just on life, as stars & planets became more complex with the passing generations of stars - mirroring biological evolution metaphorically speaking, with many parallels between the macro & the micro (structure of atoms to solar systems, the universe to brain activity).

The true immensity & complexity of the universe in my view makes religious concepts seem laughably simplistic - reality is far more impressive & awesome than any god concept.

I particularly like the metaphor of us being the children of stars, they literally created the elements which we are made of - our atoms are made in the core of stars billions of years ago, we are star stuff - the sun which provides us with the heat to keep us alive - the light for us to see the world & if I recall correctly - the radiation which in part aided mutation for our own evolution.

This is a thread for thought provoking images not political discussion, can we please try and keep it on topic, it used to be a very powerful thread.

Here's a new one, gun deaths in Florida since the 'stand your ground' law was introduced.
"In the United States, stand-your-ground law states that a person may justifiably use force in self-defense without an obligation to retreat first."

You can decide for yourselves whether you think the placement of the data makes it look misleading or not!

It's extremely misleading and disingenuous, no doubt put out there by either the NRA or some Republican gun nut!!

This is how the chart should have been displayed:

Law introduced to reassign what could previously be classified as murder as now being legal (meaning a reduction in 'murder' rate due the aforementioned individuals no longer being murdered, but killed legally in self-defence).

You would need the total death by firearms rate for a comparison to it's effectiveness (assuming a reduction in the death rate is being banded as being a benefit of the law).

It says murders not deaths would not the reclassification of murder to a lawful killing in the case of the victim/killer not retreating first not obviously create a drop as you've just redefined the nature of a lot of the shootings
