    Australia was unique among the Allies of WWI, in that her contribution to the war effort consisted entirely of volunteers. Conscription was not introduced at any stage of the war, and attempts to implement it were twice defeated by public vote.

    Ireland [ admittedly still part of the UK ] also did not have conscription foisted upon it.

    Well you can argue that conscription was attempted and the law was passed but so many groups and the public in general opposed it so much that there was little the British government could do about it.

    Indeed, just like Australia public opinion in Ireland was against the introduction of conscription.

    Would that the UK had the luxury of a public vote on conscription in 1916 we might
    be happy citizens of the Deutsch Dominion of Brittania.
