anyway for anybody that has, what do you think to it, and what are you using your linux install for?

just out of intrest, if you install linux on the ps3 can you install basic word processing programs, msn and the like, intrested to see how demanding a program you can use on it

just cant believe peeps lavish over running a linux OS on a PS3, totally pointless

Whats wrong with increasing the functionality?

You lose nothing, and only gain. Don't see how it could be seen as negative

1 of the main things that would draw me to a ps3 is the fact i could do basic pc functions on it

i.e internet browsing, msn, basic word documents

so that i could get rid of my pc and not have to bring my laptop home all the time

edit - is there a media portal program for linux that the ps3 could run?

someone has actually managed to run windows 2000 on a PS3 - it was under emulation in linux, but it was still windows on a PS3 :D

How do you install Linux on it? Do you plop the disc with Linux on it in the PS3 and simply go to the 'install OS' option? I might try it myself, get my money's worth out of the console :)

u can run Vista on it too
NOT

Well actually you can run windows XP on it so i wouldn't be surprised if in a month or 2 someone gets Vista running on it.
Though XP is slow, as iirc it only uses the PPU and no SPU's, and the resource hog that is vista will crawl along, i bet it is possible ;)

Da Mic, Yellow dog comes with open office in the build :)

*googles yellow dog linux*

with my 360 breaking often and the need for a new media centre i am tempted to sell up the 360 and kill 2 birds with one stone, i would chose the 360 over the ps3 though, but with added capabilities, have to admit a few months ago i was dead set against the ps3, even after playing one, but the added media functions do make it a decent option

nonsense. utilising the consoles power for other applications (homebrew/media functionality) is something a lot of gamers and pc users get excited about.

the ability to install other OS's on this console so easily in contrast to MS' approach is an interesting decision by sony and the future of the consoles.
