Thoughts on this MircoSD memory card?

Need a new memory card as I am running out of space on mine at the minute and did a benchmark the other day and it was crap, something like 2-3MB write speed and 7-9 MB reading speed :(, also getting ready for the Cyanogenmod froyo beta , so:

I am looking at the Samsung 8GB Micro SDHC Plus Memory Card (Class 6), which can be bought for £12.99 (free delivery).

Will this work/be compatible with my samsung spica i5700 (pretty sure it will be, but just to be on the safe side).

Was also looking at the SanDisk 8GB Micro SDHC Memory Card for £9.49 (free delivery), but obviously the Samsung MicroSD has a much better spec, but from what I have heard Sandisk are the best when it comes to reliability and just overall the best memory/company providers, plus for nearly every user review, everyone has given it full stars, and there are not too many reviews for the samsung one.

So should I just get the samsung 8GB microSD?

TIA

Personally I would go for a Sandisk as I've never had any issues with their cards. Don't buy from ebay/marketplaces though as you have probably heard of all the fakes flying around.

SanDisk are the gold standard in SD cards. I wouldn't touch any other card.

Just make sure you buy from a reputable source. eBay is flooded with fakes.

tbh either will be good. A sandisk 16gb class 2 can be had for £16.79 if you search.

Hmmm, yeah I seen that, personally though I don't want to spend much more as I am on a pretty tight budget :( :o, not only that, but apparently the 16GB and 32GB aren't as reliable as the smaller sized ones and people seem to have issues when flashing ROMs etc. with the bigger SD cards (well for the i5700 anyway, as I have read that a couple of people swap there 16 or 32GB for a smaller 2 or 4GB one just for flashing  and also I don't need that much storage just yet :p, thanks for the suggestion anyway :)

Yup, heard about all the fakes etc. not buying from ebay etc. don't think I can say where I am getting it from.

Hmmm, yeah see I really don't know what to do, as sandisk are the much better company overall, but it's just that Samsung card is class 6, which is much quicker than class 2, considering the price it seems like a steal and also the other features of it, if there true about the protection etc.

Thanks :)

My Sandisk 8gb class 2 card performs exactly as your current card, write 2mbps and read 7mbps most times. I got it from a large reputable retailer. I don't really see much point in you getting one if you want faster speeds.

I've just received a Samsung 8GB Micro SDHC Plus Memory Card (Class 6) and put it in my HTC Desire. My original card that came with the phone was a Sandisk 4GB class 2.

Using a program called SD Card Speed Test my old card measured 2MB/s write, 1MB/s read. I have no idea how accurate that program is, but by comparison the Samsung reads 8MB/s write and 6MB/s read.

I always thought write would be slower than read

Those read figures are terrible due to HTC's 2.2 kernel not being very optimised (or if you ask me, broken). I had the same as you (2MB/s write and 1MB/s read) and when I used a patched kernel with the read ahead parameters et correctly the read went from 7MB/s to 9MB/s. You'll need to root your phone and install a custom ROM though like Leedroid - version 2.2e onwards has the patched kernel.

That's weird, just when khaaan posted a screenshot of his speeds with the exact same memory card (sandisk 8GB class 2) using this app:

http://www.appbrain.com/app/sd-card-speed-tester/br.com.fast4ward.sdcardspeedtester

He got this here:

Plus on gsmarena, they link you to a memory card website and it gives benchmark results for the read and write speed;

- For the sandisk the read and write speed are exactly the same as what khaaan got except the read speed on that site says 15MB/s.

- For the samsung class 6 the read speed is 17MB/s and the write speed is 13MB/s according to that site again.

Also I need a new card anyway as I am running out of space on my 2GB class 2 microSD, so I thought I might as well get a faster/better one :p

, well it's faster than your old one anyway, have you noticed a difference in general speed of loading stuff up (if your using app2sd) or anything else.

Thanks.

I would suggest Khan's card might be a fake, as they often report stupidly high speeds. That looks far to quick for a class 2 card. ;)

I use the same SD Card Speed tester and have tried multiple different ROMs and the highest write I get is 2MB/s - card boguht from reputable etailer (Play - I think I'm allowed to say). I've been following similar speed tests recently a lot due to the kernel patching that has been going on to improve Sense based ROMs.

Lol :p, yeah I thought that at first as well, but then I seen that other memory card site reporting pretty much exactly the same speeds as his (for class 2 as well), so just thought it would be that speed then.

Right ok, think I might go for the samsung and see how it works out.

I was going to say that's where I am going to buy mine from in my first post but didn't think we where allowed to mention them :p

I've ordered the Samsung class 6 8gb one from a rainforest site. Should be good. I have 3x Sandisk (genuine) class 4 8gb, 1x kingston 4gb, and 1x generic 4gb, and 1x generic 1gb so it will be interesting to compare them. If OCUK had more stock that wasnt Kingston, I'd buy from here. Samsung or Sandisk would be my preference. Apparently you get different speeds depending which country the card was manufactured, and Sandisk at least are made in lots of places including Korea, China, Vietnam, USA, Japan. Japanese cards are supposed to be fastest.

Nice, think I will order my samsung one tonight as well from play as it will take about 1 week to arrive (free delivery), which will be just in time for the CM 2.2 beta  (hopefully :p)

Let me know anyway what the Samsung 8GB is like compared to your other ones when you get it.

Thanks.

Yup, personally from all the reviews and things that I have heard about Sandisk, I would rather have them, but the samsung one just sounds too good, especially the price of it for a class 6

Lol, never heard of that before :p

But in some ways it does make sense :p, the Japanese always have much better tech than any where else :( :p

Ive found, that when acquiring a micro sd card for my phones, its always been a case of suck it and see speed wise. This is proved when i found a cheap 16 gig class 4 (sub £18) , and chucked it in my SGS , and it has class 6-8 performance. I also have a class 6 rated 16 gig sandisk, which only appears to perform just under its rated specs. Cheap micro SD could however fail after 2 weeks, who knows !!!!

:eek:I had a class 4 16 gb Kingston and all i could get was write speed of 2mb/s, i now have my old naff 2gb scandisk C2 in and can hit 6mb while transfering straight to phone and direct in pc.

I have also had a 16gb C2 pny make whih could do 5-6 the same, had a 8gb scandisk C6 and only hit around 6mb. I just ran that program on my Galaxy S and it gave 9mbs for write but i think that testedthe internal memory on this phone which is 8gb, i guess its oretty good i have ordered a scandisk 16 gb C2 which cost me 17 delivered from the rain forest and has good reviews and is rated to give up to 6meg write.

Edit:
My order from the rain forest came ordered a 16gb class 2 scandisk and they sent a class 4 instead superb.

What's wrong with Kingston. I've had this card for years now, it writes at 11MB/s and reads at 21MB/s with Windows 7.

Nothing is wrong with them :p, actually when I was researching about micro SD cards, apparently sandisk and kingston are the same pretty much, but slightly different iirc.

Nice

Read through all the comments for the sandisk 8GB class 2 on a certain site, and some people stated that they received a class 4 card instead, which was swaying me towards it even more, but knowing my luck I would have received a class 2 instead :( :p

So I ordered the samsung 8GB class 6 on Thursday and it should be here on Wednesday or Thursday, although won't be using it till there is a beta of froyo for the samsung spica i5700 as I cba backing up apps etc. to just put a new card in and then do it a few days later when possibly a beta will be out that will require a clean start anyway.

So I'll post a screenshot of the benchmark result when I get froyo up and running.

new card arrived today.

Hmm, my initial thoughts are that it (Samsung class 6) doesnt appear to be any faster than my sandisk class 4 card but I will test them both and post comparative benchies :)

What device are you using? I noticed a massive change in my Desire when I got faster speeds from the tweaked kernel, especially loading pictures etc.

Ok. Here are the results of my benchmarking. I used a USB microSD adapter (Sandisk branded) on all three of the tested cards. I'll let the results do the talking but ultimately I'm not overly impressed by the performance of the Samsung card, when compared to the "lower" class Sandisk. Ok so the Samsung is water/shock/magnet proof. I will bare that in mind next time I go swimming in magnet-infested waters...with my phone. :p
