Throttling a house mates internet connection?

Right, i live with 3 other students. One of these students downloads gigs and gigs of 'nature documentaries' as he calls them. The problem is that the cheap BT HomeHub gets confused if too much data goes through it and typically will:

Allows the download application to continue at its normal rate. But at the same time...
Firefox and IE both say that i'm not connected to the internet.

The situation is resolved if you switch off/on the BTHomeHub. (however sometimes onl for a few miutes)

The problem is definatly caused by the one person in the house. So can i throttle thir internet connection so that it doesnt overload/confuse the hub?

Has anyone else had this problem with the BTHomeHub? I will buy a better router in the new year but in a way dont see why i should have to.

The Homehub is a total pile of rubbish anyway. If you manage to sort this problem you'll just end up with another not too far down the line.

In my house we use a BT Voyager ADSL router, we tried the Homehub and went from 7MB connection to 4MB. Popped the Voyager back on and the connection went back up.

Add to the fact it has no wireless security and it's hard to see why anybody except the desperate would use it.

I'd order a new router mate. :)

Get a better router!

In the meantime, try turning off the firewall on the HomeHub. It may be getting overwhelmed and possibly flagging the p2p traffic as a DOS attack or something.

You could also try and convince your horse-porn-downloading housemate to go into his p2p client settings and lower the maximum number of simultaneous connections. ( Or sneak in and do it yourself while he is away. ;) )

I was eyeing up the Netgear DG834N. I just want to make sure i'm the one that buys it so that my hosemate cant be in control of the admin settings.

I've disabled the Firewall as per your suggestions so we'll see if that helps. Just need to wait for me to have to have some money :)

Bear in mind that the DG834N doesn't do any form of QoS either, so if he's maxing out the connection you'll still see slow browsing.

Some Linksys models have a QoS option. You can basically prioritize web browsing traffic, just make everything else either normal or low priority. Doing this will obviously mean you can still surf and when your connection is idling then his downloads go back to using full bandwidth.

The Linksys WAG354G is good and it has a QoS menu.

First step would be to tell him to sort it out - lowering the connections made and capping the down/upload speed to a sensible level should sort out all problems. If he refuses kick him off and tell him to get his own line.

We use a WRT54GL with the Tomato firmware and that does an ok job, but web p2p absolutely cripples it, even with QoS enabled, for some reason. Plus it's an ethernet router so you'd need an ethernet modem to go with it, so not the best of choices :p

We have two homehubs in range and they're both secure

Securely fixed to the table? :p

I'm sitting here now looking through the options and no, there's nothing for any kind of wireless security.

Did you flash a new firmware or something?

My Dad has a HomeHub and it definitely has wireless security features.

Interesting thread as I'm in the market for a new router for the very same reason (step-brother). Might order the Linksys.

They're not ours, we picked them up on a wireless scan of the area and both are definitely secured. It's either that or some people with decent routers have decided to set their SSIDs to 'BTHomeHub' :p

they do have security

but only WEP. and its not an option. its a sticker on the back with a WEP key pre programmed in

unless this only comes on later ones ?

IIRC it has WPA/WPA2 can't remember which, in addition to WEP, you just have to log into the BTHomehub to change the settings.

Homehub comes configured for WEP (not good I know but it's to maintain compatability with older kit that may not be able to do WPA) and WPA / WPA2.

Mines set for WPA2 and works no problem at all

edit: and no, I'm not desperate

Another vote for a Tomato-equipped Linksys here. I have one on Virgin cable and the QoS is perfect for the scenario described.
