Throwing money in a dangerous area wont make a difference..

Well it does bring jobs into the area, less unemployed and less time on peoples hands could reduce crime right?

The majority of construction was outsourced due to time constriants and a lot of businesses are just sending employees down to work at the temp store during the games.

McDonalds arn't hiring staff for their four stores, there picking the 'best' staff from every store and sending them down there.

To be honest most of East London is like that. Having lived in East London around Stratford, Gate, Plaistow, Canning Town, Leyton etc there is not a lot of difference between them.

yea there all the same, including walthamstow were i was oirginaly brought up.

that place was a joke too. daily figths between my school and others using belts, bats etc(not knifes i must admit) and a local school gang burning down the local church around there happened as well.

I now base myself in chingford which is a lot nicer area then walthamstow, startford etc and doing my best to find a mortgage in this area. not cheap but its safe.

This kind of teen gang violence and silly stabbings over nothing is common in all areas of London, not just areas which have recently benefited from an influx of money.

It comes down to poverty, broken homes, a lack of willingness to do the right thing and get an education, finally the influence of gang culture and such from music and media.

I don't really see that being eliminated from London.

You're always going to get these 'gangs' around London, no matter what you do. Need to go all the way back to the root of the problem which is unemployment, lack of social support, single parent families, education etc...

I just wish they would sort out their beef and hang around in wastelands instead of around Nandos, KFC or JD Sports and ruining everyone else's day shopping!

I live in Deptford, not far from New Cross, Peckham and Brixton. Despite the so-called regeneration projects, it still feels like a poo-hole lol. But as long as you look after yourself, it's alright. I used to live in East Ham, and went to school in Canning Town. That's even worse.

Its just the way London is.
An area can be newly developed and there will be people living from all walks of life, however you always still have council estates and people living in poverty or on benefits right next to it.

I think there are only a handful of areas in London which aren't like that, of course they are some of the most expensive places to live, unless you are a Russian Oligarch or a Saudi Prince.

Going to be very interesting after the games. Hope the area can benefit but sad to say I doubt it. Spoke to one of the engineers on the atheletes village about the flats they will be selling after the games. He just stressed 3 words "Don't Buy One" he didn't think they were built correctly due to time constraints.

The sad truth is that the only way that Stratford is realistically going to improve is if the current residents can't afford to live there - moving the problem to another borough.

I can see that happening though. Small one bedroom flats in my block are renting out at£ 1,100 a month. Once the housing benefit reforms bed in, Stratford could change dramatically.

Thats unlikely to happen though, as like I said, many are living in council provided properties, so it doesn't matter how many fancy apartments there are and wealthy people living there.

I'd also add that I don't believe any new housing development can be built in London now without some of it being allocated to social housing, otherwise the Developers wouldn't even get permission to build. So no doubt many of these new places in Stratford also have housing that the council will use.

I doubt there have been much in the way of studies done on this yet, but I think its quite odd. I live in a new build apartment block next to an improvised council estate and I've seen on numerous occasions that some of the people who live on it and don't work are quite vocal about 'us'. They do anything from calling us 'posh' people to complaining about being on the road outside because it was 'theirs'. I think with a lot of them though its down to the fact that they don't work and are at home all day and like to fight over anything. My complex though also has two blocks which are purely for council use as social housing, again a requirement from the council in order for the build to go ahead. Its like night and day when you go between the blocks as to how the people living there behave, treat the property and act towards you. Sure I can't tar everyone who lives in it with the same brush, but its kind of like people paid a lot of money to buy or rent the flats I live in, then you get people living in the council part for free who are all neighbours from hell.

Shocking really

LOL, is it? If they weren't blacks then it would (increasingly over the years) have been Asians.

The main reason that the police don't break crime rates down by race is because it was revile the awful truth that everyone wants to bury, but everyone knows in real life anyway.

That's because London has a largest population of black and Asian people than anywhere else in Britain by an extremely large margin. By the way, the police do have a special section especially for black people.

It's like saying white people are better because there's less white people with HIV/AIDS in Africa.
