Are you certain the trojan was delivered by an unopened attachment, and not by automatically viewing remote web content, which can be disabled.
I use IMAP w/tbird and have unopened trojan attachments in archived email, that I never bothered to tidy up.
The malware scan detects them, yes, but they are not activated, just inert.
