Well, like I said, my Brother works for a small privately owned recruitment agency, getting people into specialised positions. They will receive a large fee upon getting somebody placed, then continue to get a fee, whether that comes from the company itself, or from the person's wages I don't know. But given that they are being paid thousands of pounds, it doesn't really matter quite the same as £3 difference did to somebody working minimum wage as in my earlier example.

There's a difference, you're talking about Contracts/Temp to Perm recruiment versus Permanent recruitment.

Temp to perm may involve a company continually paying the recruitment company whilst that candidate is employed - whether it be 3 months or 2 years.

Perm recruitment firms normally take a cut (from 10% through to 30%) of the candidates first year salary, and that's it.

Every recruitmant agency I've ever known will usually take a 10-20% cut as a one off for getting that person into a position. That's it, no more fees. Working for an agency is different to a recruitment agency.

They're scum. There are some genuine ones who are really helpful, and do really want to help, unfortunately, 99% of them are total scumbags

This.

Found one decent company, a local one with local connections who are still personable whilst being large enough to be useful, the rest are just scummers who want the cash then dump you when it's not there.

A lot will merely 'cover' you on a job so they have dibs on you with no intention of putting you forward but merely to stop their rivals, really crooked and you're best bet is certainly direct. Luckily the majority of larger companies ate well enoug equipped to do their own in house stuff, unfortunately a lot of people are too lazy to look directly and just gp to the expected panacea of the agency to do everything for them meaning companies can sometimes be forced into using them.

I've had my hopes raised and dashed, been sold a pack of lies and generally given the run around so many times by various agencies in the area back when I worked in admin.

Next year, when I'm qualified and on one of my two month down periods, I may just revisit some of these agencies, feign interest in job and jump through their hoops, then pull out at the last minute, just to see if they like having their time wasted too.

The company our office uses seem to be pretty good. So much so that we refuse to take enquiries from any others.

This year, they've even called up and asked our office manager to take everyone out for a Christmas lunch on their dime as thanks for sticking with them. :)
