Short story first. Im running, or trying to run(it sorta works must have the time), a FTP server which is rarely used, a Project Zomboid server for myself and my friends of 3. All this is run on a Toshiba Satellite C650D(horrid thing) with a single core AMD v120 and measly 2gigs of ram where 300mb is reserved for hardware. Yes please get it out of your system
laugh away im fine with it.
Now im thinking of sorta upgrade this setup, im saying sort of as i do not have the money for a proper server setup. What i had in mind was something like ASRock N3700M Quad Core N3700 as its cheap to buy and uses almost no power and i have a PSU and 8 gigs of DDR3 ram laying around i dont use.
Purpose of the micropants server:
Simple xlite FTP
1x Minecraft server eventually no more than 10 players.
1x Project Zomboid server no more than 10 players.
Maybe some sort of fileserver for movies and random stuff, will not be transcoding/decoding/encoding just pure filetransfer. Again worth noting that load will not be 24/7.
Am i bats*** crasy? or can i get acceptable/workable results. Right now its working but that single core processor is really strained to its limits and ping times have a tendency to go up on the game server ..when its really bad it will go north of 200ms from 5ms over local network
.. as i said ..laugh its free.
EDIT: On second thougts would i be better of with a AMD Athlon 5350 and a cheapo AM1 board? powerdraw is going to go up a bit but nothing to bad.. it costs the same as the n3770m.
edit2: Well just found a deal on a used media center with 4gb ram, Amd 5150 quad core and a 64gb kingston ssd with a very small form factor case and DC powerbrick for 65 quid.. gonna pick that up and see how much i can push it.. i would love some recommendations on a OS that suits small low powered servers well. While i would prefer windows i do not have any copies of Windows server around.
