Due to living in hotels thanks to work for the last 6 months, I've got used to going the hotel gyms by myself. Usually hammer the weights for about 45mins, maybe an hour max.

Been back home the last few days, and tonight went the gym with a couple of mates. After an hour, I was ready to leave, asked them how much longer they were gonna be. "at least another 45 minutes" was the answer. Apparently they normally work out for up to two hours.

Is this a 'normal' amount of time? Their goals are pretty much the same as mine, good form with lifting, 3 to 4 sets increasing the weight after each set, usually 8-12 reps.

Although after an hour they were taking more time after completing 4 sets before moving on to the next item of equipment, is there benefit to slogging it out for two hours, or are you just flogging a dead horse by continuing?

After an hour or so you should be totally shattered. I know I couldn't go for another 45 minutes at useful intensity after workout.

Cortisol levels begin to rise quite high after about an hour of intense exercise, so if trying to build muscle it doesn't really make sense to train for any longer if that's your goal. Cortisol is catabolic, not good.

If your workouts are lasting over an hour then you need to raise the pace, lower rest times, etc. If you're resting 45-90 secs between sets, moving between exercises quickly and not standing around chatting then there's no way it should last over an hour.
