Tips For Dealing With Dealers?

All I would add is that buying a car from a dealer is something to utterly dread. Never something to look forward to. If you come away happy then you don't even know it yet that you've been screwed. If you come away angry or sad then you're doing pretty much as well as anyone.
I shouldn't laugh, but it's so true :(

Cheers for all the tips guys... It seems to be just that all dealers are lying scum, and I should just know that the opposite of everything they say is probably the truth :D

Luckily I will be visiting a few dealers at the weekend with a friend with big boobs (Major plus so far!) and who is a right petrol-head, compared to me with my moobs and complete ignorance concerning cars!

Anyway, thanks again :)

Seems to be an awful lot of resentment towards car dealers/salesmen in here, but it has got to be said: Can you really blame them? If you were earning buttons as a basic salary and was completely dependant on meeting sales targets so that you can put food on the table wouldn't you be a little bit pushy?

The shame seems to be that 99% of car salesmen have absoultely no interest in cars what so ever and do the job not because they enjoy it, but because they've been born with the gift of the gab.

It's also worth remembering that pressure selling must work or else they wouldn't use such tactics :).

If they don't feel comfortable doing this they shouldn't be in that job.
If they do feel comfortable doing this then that's fine, but it removes any reason whatsoever to like them or be lenient on them because it means they aren't the sort of people I want to be nice to in the first place if they are happy to do the job.

so the consensus is, never buy a new car, buy it of a real person after they bought it new? am i right?

thats disappointing, ive always looked forward to going in a porcshe dealer when im rich while wearing painting clothes and just being like, This 911, how much can you take off the price

i dunno why i want to do that really, i just want them to do the whole you cant afford it thing

I've heard that "Prestige" dealerships do the "judging the book by it's cover" a lot less than you'd expect.

With dealers the best way is to not take any BS from them. I actually almost enjoy talking to dealers nowadays because I just will not take any BS. I just can't stand there and cringe through it anymore. I'll tell them to their face they are lieing in front of anyone. I don't care how much of a **** I look, they need to be told. You do get the odd honest and nice dealer, but the majority are there to make a sale at whatever cost, and it shows.

i know a few people that have had that sort of treatment from bmw though.
The one went in to look at a 1 series 116i or something and then they were like you cant afford it, so he kindly pointed at the 335d outside, which was his :P

That sounds pretty sad. I'd imagine that by the time you are in the position to afford a new 911 you'll not really want to be visiting showrooms wearing old dirty clothes anyway

Yea, I'm sure he did.

Meanwhile I frequently walk into BMW dealers wearing a hoody and a pair of skate shoes and walk out again after having been treated very politely and given the keys to a '10 plate car.

Well as said already, they are liars first and foremost. Some of the rubbish I have heard the sales people come out with at the place I work part-time at is just Lolworthy.
On a side note, someone traded in a 60plate Civic Type R for a new Astra VXR yesterday.. epic downgrade or what.

I was one of these so called sharks for 7 years from proper old school Pendle style selling for Arnold Clark right through to the other end of the market doing 3 years for BMW and it is just like any other profession. You get both sharks and nice people doing it and there is no perfect way to guarantee success. Some of the absolute idiots do really well and some of the nice guys also do really well too. Myself I tried to be honest and sell with a bit of flair.
No other profession I could think of could possibly attract more lunatics to it though.

I feel for the guys still doing it. I was pretty successful throughout my time doing it but in my last year took about an £8k dip in my earnings from the previous year. I was lucky in that I had a decent education and could get out the trade.
most of these guys are working 60 hour weeks, are only able to take maybe 5-10 days holiday a year and unless you are good wont be earning more than £35k.

They deal with members of the public who waste their time every day and managers who are generally scum.

Cut the guys some slack.
