TiVo To Brick All Remaining UK PVRs On June 1

The waste on which capitalism relies still sucks . . .

... THE INBUILT TUNER CAN'T RECEIVE DIGITAL SIGNALS, IT'S ANALOGUE ONLY. THEY HAVE BEEN SUPERSEDED. THEY ARE OBSOLETE. ...
Actually, as you are probably well aware, this is complete rubbish. Analogue signals are still being broadcast in some places around the country. I believe that the final switchover date is in 2012?

A) who still uses analogue ...
See above.

The tuner is analogue and no broadcasts mean that part is obsolete. However, ever heard of common freeview boxes and SCART sockets? Yes, it's analogue but then lots of people don't have HDMI televisions or set top boxes ...
Some people simply can't understand why anyone would not spend their lives throwing away perfectly good kit, simply so as to allow them to rush out and buy the latest stuff . . . in fact some of these suckers have recently been horribly burnt by rushing out to buy Sandy Bridge Motherboards :D

Who cares about the analogue signal - the TiVo came with the IR leads and software to control a separate receiver box - either Sky or Freeview.

My TiVo is still working fine, controlling a Freeview box.

And? My statement still stands. They have been superseded by newer technology, and are now obsolete. Technology moves on, get over it.

What are you talking about? There was nothing 'rubbish' in my statement. Analogue is being phased out, things have moved on, and as a piece of equipment the original TiVo has been superseded. The fact that it still works doesn't matter, many VHS recorders still work...

Seriously, are you people expecting TiVo to keep running the service at a loss for the handful of people who are still clinging on to an old and obsolete piece of hardware? Wake up.

Got nothing to do with throwing good stuff out, it's about you expecting support which costs money on an obsolete good, nothing stopping you from carrying on using it.

So people who paid £200 for a lifetime subscription (lifetime of the box) should just accept the fact that the company is changing its mind? As long as the box is still going tivo should be providing EPG data for them. The fact that they're old, or half the people here can't see why anyone would use them doesn't mean that those who do should be screwed over or have to pay to upgrade.

come 2012 or whenever the switch off is they will be obsolete anyway, this thread is trying to whip up a frenzy about obsolete technology

My dad has as TIVO, bought for him by me years ago. I honestly didn't expect it to last this long considering the abuse it gets.

I presume too many people took the £200 for life offer and it isn't paying them enough anymore - considering the pot of gold Virgin are obviously offering them to 'attempt' to force their customers over.

I'll get him a freeview pvr to replace it with, the one I saw the other day knocks spots off the tivo for interface.

As has already been said they can receive scart from a freeview box / sky box or even a virgin box. You then set up a little IR transmitter in front of your digi box and program in the relevant channel commands.

They had sky 10 years ago, seperate digi boxes are not new.

I'm pretty clueless in this Tivo game...what features does it offer over say a standard PVR with EPG box that people would pay £10 a month for?

The advantage that TiVo offers over 'normal' PVRs is the fact that it does stuff like learning your viewing habits/program types and automatically records and recommends other shows based on this. To be fair they are clever boxes, but things have moved on. The new VM TiVo service does look impressive:

CONSUME, WATSE, CONSUME, WASTE - that's what Capitalism is all about

I suspect that one big advantage favoured by those who happen to have a TiVo box is that they don't have to pay £10 a month for a "standard PVR with EPG box".

Still, it's only £10 a months, who cares, it's only money after all

Stop talking rubbish, again.

Freeview PVRs don't require a subscription, you buy the box and they work with the standard Freeview EPG. No monthly charge.

I've just signed up as one of their "most valued customers" for a chance to get one for a year.

I've gotta say it does look impressive.

Tivo is the one with the £10 a charge....thats why I was asking what extra features it has that makes people want to pay £10 a month extra

Or Freesat :)

Exactly. I really don't get why I lot of people pay a lot of money per month for TV (other than sport and I don't think that is fair!) Especially as paying for lots of repeats really galls me.

Freesat + LoveFilm is my prefered combo. A lot cheaper too...
