TiVo To Brick All Remaining UK PVRs On June 1

I've always been confused by TiVO, how is it different to a £100 Humax that records multiple channels at once using freeview with no charge?

They did it before others and did it so much better than others. Similar to apple and Iphone. Now others have caught up I don't see the point in it. Although VM tivo is different as that's offering a whole new service. They also do funky things like record stuff it thinks you will like, but pretty sure others are offering that as well these days.

The advantage that TiVo offers over 'normal' PVRs is the fact that it does stuff like learning your viewing habits/program types and automatically records and recommends other shows based on this.

That's it? That's what people pay for?! I'd pay not to have it record tons of crap it no doubt wrongly thought I would like when I could just have a brief look at the programme guide.

THE INBUILT TUNER CAN'T RECEIVE DIGITAL SIGNALS, IT'S ANALOGUE ONLY. THEY HAVE BEEN SUPERSEDED. THEY ARE OBSOLETE.

That statement is so misleading. Buying a TiVo late was one of my worse gadget buying mistakes. To this day the EPG and the way it works leaves Sky's far behind. TiVo has this wonderful ability to control an external receiver so apart from HD stuff it still works as well today as any other PVR. Mine has been recording stuff from Sky for years and years. The TiVo experience is something that only using it one can understand.

It'd have missed the new series of TG had TiVo not got a season pass to it. I had Series Link on my Sky HD box but it forgets as soon as a series ends.

The old analogue Series 1 TiVo boxes are effectively being bricked as the EPG and the way TiVo process it is what makes TiVo better than the rest.

Add a network card and bigger HDs it was simply years ahead.

I have been using my series 1 Tivo for the last 10 years but now have a nice shiny new Virgin Tivo :D

The series 1 Tivo may be old but its certainly not obsolete and bar the new Virgin Tivo there is no better PVR.

There is still hope for the Series 1 as there are people working on a fix to continue to update the epg data from an alternative source.

They are as nearly obsolete as say a first gen non Tivo PVR, and nearly as obsolete as VCR's.

They don't receive digital, so in about a year and half at most their built in tuner is going to be worthless.
It's pretty amazing that Tivo have supported them this long as it is, they never sold well in the UK, and the number of boxes paying subs must by now be tiny.

Yup, my area suddenly stopped receiving analogue. So now I have a choice of satellite or cable. I'm on VM atm but luckily I don't watch TV (not switched the box on for over a year).

Let see you setup Wishlists or teach your Sky box what tv you like / dislike so it can record suggestions for you.;)

And don't forget Tivo was around well before the Sky+ box, Topfields or any other noteworthy pvr, the Virgin Tivo is just the latest generation of a great product and Tivo is still the market leader in the USA.

I don't want my box recording loads of crap that it thinks I like nor every single terrible movie that an actor I like starred in. I have the imdb and the tv guide at no cost for that. I can't see the appeal honestly, even if you do watch 10 hours of tv a day.

Yeah seems like a standard pvr, "browse by theme" sky already does that, "search for programmes by name" sky does that, "pick of the week tv" sky does that. I'm watching it and thinking welcome to last decade.

Yeah it does that, but more too. Seriously, have you actually watched the video all the way through?

The original TiVo is basically obsolete, but the fact remains TiVo, as a system, is the best and most feature rich PVR system available. Things like suggestions, wishlists etc. are beyond what any other PVR offers.
