Hi Guys,
So i am new to these forums as a poster but i have been reading on and off for quite a while. I had it in my head that i would like to built myself a computer and the OCUK forums seemed to me to be a good source of information. SO, christmas is coming and i think it may well be time to take the leap, i am, by no means in a rush and what with all this talk of new CPU's, motherboards and GFX cards i figure i have until the end of January to make my various choices. One thing i can start to look at now is a monitor. I have been reading all i can to find out about the various technologies around. The only screen that has caught my eye so far is the U2410 from dell found here:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-036-DE

Things i like about this screen include:
1. Size, I have never had a 24" screen.
2. 1920 x 1200 resolution.
3. IPS technology (better viewing angles).
4. Styling.
5. Comes calibrated in the factory apparenly.

Things is dislike about this screen include:
1. Price. (£549)
2. IPS technology (Possible lack of gaming performance).
3. No chance of 3D / 120Hz.

I guess my questions about this screen are:
1. Is this really a suitable screen for a home office/game station given its price?
2. Would i be better getting a 120Hz screen for silky smooth 2D or potential 3D rig?
3. Do i even want to play games in 3D? I only know of one person who has a 3D gaming setup, he hates it, says its to hard to aim and always plays with it on 2D mode.
4. Is the response time acceptable with this screen? stated as 6ms G2G. and what about input lag? I do not believe i have ever had any problems gaming on an older dell 19" screen, maybe im just being paranoid.
5. Are there any other monitors you guys would recommend? I am probably a little over the amount i would like to spend on a monitor tbh but then again it is christmas :)

Any help would be much appreciated guys.

Many thanks
Jonathan

I really think you should read this review as it addresses many of your concerns. As I'm sure you're aware IPS technology is about a lot more than viewing angle, especially on a monitor like the U2410.

wow, it's gone up ~£100 since I bought mine

for that kind of money you can get the u2711 from the manufacturer (I believe it's £571 because they have 25% off)

Just out of curiosity - is the U2711H 'deal' actually still on? People often make the mistake of thinking it's exactly like the U2410 but larger. As TFT Central points out in their reviews gamers might want to have a think about how important low input lag is to their gaming. :)

^ the deal goes on til the 21st

also give up on 3D, it's just a generally bad idea for any consumer product from mine and others experiences

also if the input lag is really a big deal for you the the Hazro HZ27Wb is going to be released soon which has a lower input lag than the u2711

Hey Guys,

First off i wanted to say thanks for the replys, lots of good info in those reviews... The first review from http://www.pcmonitors.org/monitor-reviews/dell-ultrasharp-u2410 seems to back up the information over at http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm - the screen is a good all rounder, it performs very well for an IPS screen in both home user tasks as well as in professional applications.

As for my old monitor, unfortunately i dont not have it to hand any more, although i can say it was supplied with an XPS 700 i bought from dell, way back when i thought a that a screen was just a screen. It looked like a pretty standard 19" SXGA monitor from dell however I do not know the model number. Googling this system has brought me to the following website http://pc.joystiq.com/2006/11/02/dells-xps-700-reviewed-and-pc-gaming-wars/ where a picture of the monitor I believe was purchased with the system is displayed near the top. Currently I am using an XPS 1530 laptop with WUXGA screen, hence my desire for another WUXGA display. I would not say that input lag is a really big deal for me, although I keep reading everwhere about its effect on gamers... I think I am possibly reading to much into it.

To muddy the waters further, I see a new review of the HZ27Wb has been posted on tft central today at http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hazro_hz27wb.htm although the size and price of these larger monitors are slightly intimidating, though they do look amazing, I wonder if they perhaps have a 24" in the pipe line for release soon? I better get to reading this new review.

Further comments and opinions will be welcomed

Many Thanks
Jonathan

The harzo HZ27Wb is very nice nice aswell, seemingly with better performance in some areas than the the more expensive dell U2711, and how about the Samsung 2233RZ, they say " it is an excellent choice for gamers." - is it really that much better espically forgetting 3D??

a lot of gamers notice the difference in the faster response and extra frames however you give up on a lot of quality compared to IPS monitors, hence why I went for the U2410 over the BenQ XL2410T

go for the u2711 instead, but you only have today and tomorrow to buy it, also you have to buy from the manufacturer

little bit more expensive though at £639

Just to finish off this thread, a massive thanks to HW91 as I now have a U2711 (rev4) sitting downstairs under the tree.

Merry Christmas me :)
