To get new system or to wait?

So a few months ago my 3930k system died, have been using a old Q6600. I never did actually complete that system, was still using my old graphics card. So I need a new system, was thinking of getting a Ryzen 1600x with a B350 motherboard and 16GB of DDR4 3200. Initially I was going to wait to see how the Ryzen firmware improved and what the gains are with an AMD CPU and AMD GPU, as I expect 1080p having deficit to the 7700k will be more than halved, but I have been hearing that DRAM prices are set to increase. I do however game at 1440p although good 1080p performance would just make it a more secure option.

Other options would be to wait and see what Intel do, Skylake-E shouldn't be far off, and there is also the 6 core Coffee Lake and also the possibility of a price war. But the main reason why I like the idea of the 1600x it's it's price, the pound had crashed and it's not a very good time to be getting high end components. And with a 1600x system, I could use it for a few years and then get a high end system when the Pound has recovered in around 4 years.

That's a hell of a gamble.
Hehe :)

I would get the 1600 (clock to near x) coupled with a Gigabyte B350, decent HS and DDR4 of your choice.

The socket's not going anywhere, thanks to AMDs commitment to a platform, and it will last you your 4 years - and in that time you could stick in variety of cards, as and when you can afford them. No matter how much our government tries to batter the pound in that time :)

Finally, decent competition will effect the prices of the CPU market more than our exchange rate - anytime soon.

agree, cant go wrong, or the 1700 = 8 core at a better price than the intel route. Oh the extra money you can put on a better gpu,

i have a 1700 - Gigabyte B350 gaming 3 micro board - Kingston Fury Black 16GB DDR4 PC4-19200C15 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

Noctua NH-U12S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU Cooler with NF-A15 Fan

sold my i7-6700K ages ago and no regrets in any form whatsoever

Bios f4 needed for a smooth ride, had to use 1 stick of memory on f2 bios to get windows loaded

Already have a Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme, I think Thermalright offer a free mounting kit for it.

Thinking that the 1700 might be the best option. Not really looking for a massive overclock, but I would like to get it to around 3.6 - 3.8, while still being very quite. Does the 1700 have very similar temps and power draw to the 1800x at the same clock speeds?

So easy to get 3.8, my system is so quite. Temps are like 50 - 60 with a quick stress test, meaning 20 - 30 mins max, in fact I stress for temp values. I do not believe in this 8 hr, 24, hr thingy. Have yet to have a system fail on me because i did not!

My heat sink is a Noctua NH-U12S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU Cooler with NF-A15 Fan

Get the 1700 and enjoooooooooooooooooooy!

I agree with most of the above, if you wait you will be forever waiting and while waiting you will read more that will make you want to wait longer and longer. It's a never ending conundrum, in the meantime you could be enjoying your new kit and forget about all the BS!
