To Huawei or not to Huawei?

I'm looking to upgrade my Moto G5 plus and after a little research I have my eyes set on the Huawei P30. However, with what's going on between the US and China, would this be a risky purchase? I understand that handsets released before the trade embargo last year are still being supported to some extent by Google but will these the latest security and android updates be available?

Are there any other people here in a similar situation, wondering what to do?

I was also looking at the pixel 4 and quite like the look of that although much pricier but the poor battery is putting me off that.

I currently have the Huawei P20 and will be moving away from the brand in May. I can't see it getting better between them and I don't want to lose Google Apps. Aside from this, it's been a great phone.

Honestly if it was me I wouldn't bother.

If you are looking at the pixel 4, maybe take a look at the OnePlus 7 pro/7T ?

Had a Huawei phone for 2 years that died 10 days ago. The only phone that suddenly died on me with no warning. I made the mistake of saving some images and minor docs on it. Despite multiple attempts to retrieve the data in engineering mode, data recovery was unsuccessful.

Edit. That phone was in low use and had no physical damage.

Since bought a commodity Samsung (~$400 aud) replacement , plus similar secondary backup phone. Will not buy Huawei again personally. Ymmv.

That's what I'm worried about too. Shame because I really like the look the P30. Just to be nosey, what will you be moving to after your current phone?

I'll check this out. Cheers

I'm sticking with Hauwei moving forward, yes I will miss out on some Google services but I love Huawei's hardware and I'm up for the challenge to try something new and support some good competition.

I've already installed the Huawei Browser which I like a lot, much smoother than chrome, I recently tried out the Huawei Search beta and that was also very good, it actually brought in contacts which was taken out of Google search!, Huawei Assistant 'Hey Celia' looks pretty competent.

I believe the Huawei app gallery will grow, they are investing a ton of money into it, they have convinced Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo to form the GDSA (Global Developer Service Alliance), a platform that allows dev's outside China to upload their apps to all of these smartphone makers app-stores at the same time, if anyone outside of Google and iPhone can bring a viable app-store to the market then I believe Huawei can do it.

I keep on looking at the P40 Lite (not the cheaper less powerful E version) and being very tempted, especially the green version. I would like to try de-googling my life, but for my work I need Google authenticator and whatsapp messenger and video calling.

P30 and P30 Pro will continue to have full google services. Huawei seem OK with updates, Android 10 already rolled out and EMUI due some minor tweaks later this month.

I've got the P30 Pro and it's a nice phone. It's not quite Samsung flagship territory from a software point of view but close enough and I got a very good deal.

I'm another one with thumbs up for Huawei had the mate 20 Pro and media pad t5 good bits of kit.
Currently using the p40pro and agree that the emui browser is really quite good. (gms install pretty easy. Although personally I don't think that they are needed life isn't too bad without)
Best part of the phone so far which was a surprise, was the Ldac encoder for Bluetooth streaming. 990kbps makes quite a difference of the aac format. C urrwntly enjoying that with the home hifi, supposedly the freebuds support it as well along with a data rate up to 2.3mbs not sure what ear buds are going to do with that.

My main phone is currently a Huawei Mate 20 X and its a really nice phone and I enjoy using it a lot .... but I wouldn't purchase a new Huawei phone without Google services as they are tied in to much to the way I manage my life. Its a shame as I am sure their newer phones are probably really good from a hardware perspective.

My next phone will probably be a Xiaomi, which was the brand I had prior to this Huawei phone.

What matters the most to you in a phone? The P30 Pro for example has very good cameras and good battery life, vs the Pixel 4 which is probably best in class for pictures from the main sensor but questionable battery life.

I have the Mate 20 X & It's a cracking phone, if a little on the large side.

I wouldn't buy another Huawei if they don't have any Google services.

Really liking my P30 Pro after 6 months, had Pixel 2 prior and Samsung Galaxy S7 before that. It's as good as any of the other flagship brands in my opinion and has all the google services fully functioning perfectly.

I just find it a little big after the Pixel 2.

Having had an Honor 8 Pro for three years, I doubt I'd get another Huawei. It's been fine, but there's been enough niggles over that time to put me off and I don't think their new devices have much of a future without Google.

It's deffo thumbs down from me, I had both the Honor Play, then the Mate 20x which were both great in terms of everyday use.
However the software support is utterly atrocious, almost laughable and will now be even worse as they are outside of the Google eco system and despite the hardware being great there are too many caveats for me personally to consider them a viable option for the below:

- Phones that were promised 2 years worth of OS have been dropped like a stone, not trustworthy.
- Banking / Payment apps not option as far as I'm aware and never will be outside of Google Eco System.
- Security updates are months behind, my daughters Mate 20 just got an update last week that brought it upto January 2020. Its a sim free model.
- Their phones are only getting more expensive yet coming with more limitations so not even competing at price level any more.
- I expect post the pandemic the anti China rhetoric that seems to be sweeping various places won't help their cause outside of China
- Many countries are actively removing their hardware from their infrastructure, again not a great signpost for the future viability

The Uk is already going to pull the current Huawei 4g/5g hardware , By the look of it it could be Bt and Ericson who install the mast hardware ect. This pandemic i fear has made it a lot worse for the Huawei situation. Which is a shame i know a few people who have there phones and love them bar the missing google services and some do not even mind its not there.

On 2nd Huawei phone myself, just picked up a Nova 5T. Offers great bang per buck, has all the google services and banking/nfc payments function as normal.

Although I don't have a problem buying Huawei, I usually keep phones for at least a couple of years and then upgrade to something released the previous year (i.e next time around will be upgrade ~ 2022 to phone released in 2021) and usually around the £250 mark. Probably rules me out getting a Huawei the next time round as they have already been excluded from play store and can't see that reversing.

Thanks for everyone's views.

I decided to go with the pixel 4 and received it yesterday. Enjoying it so far. I know the battery isn't the best but I'm not a heavy user and it seems to be lasting well for me based on current usage.

As mentioned above, the uncertainty over Huwaei's future with Google (I know the P30 is supported for now) and the inevitable backlash that I think China is going to receive from the West after the Corona Virus crisis begins to settle, makes it too much of a gamble for me. Shame really.
