can someone tell me what American dip **** thought that slicing a series of a TV show in half, slapping a 2 month gap in the middle and passing them off as "seasons" was a good idea?

an example, Stargate... "last" episode is this week in the U.S. which is episode 10 (i watch via an american friends slingmedia, google it, its fun :D) it wont be back till december / january upon which time episodes 11 to 22 will air under the guise of it being a new "season"

its not a new season, why are they lying, i dont understand. Surely American people arnt dumb enough to think that these are 2 seperate production runs ???

it completely spoils the mood and flow of it all. can you imagine if they did that here ??? got to the 6th episode of Dr who and called it the season finale, then slapped a 2 month gap in before you got to see the next 6 ?

Who really cares? I'd rather alternate 3 months with new shows, wait 3 months with reruns, then have 3 more months with new shows. That way I don't end up with 6 months contiguous reruns at a time.

Then again, I'm not much of a TV watcher.

its just very different to how they air the american shows here, i dont like storys being interupted.

Same thing with South Park. They seem to go off air for absolutely ages inbetween runs which is rather strange.

On a similar theme I've only just managed to catch up and finish watching the final series of The West Wing as I thought C4 had dropped it after season 4 (I think it was that one anyway) and found out a season or 2 later that they had transferred it to E4 - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Its a mid season break, not an end of season,...aint it? but yeah, its annoying- but they have to make the show last!

at least we have prison break, family guy, simpsons, american dad etc... still going

It allows the producers to take time with their shows and produce a better quality product. Its a good thing IMO not a bad one.

Is also a better way to show arc driven shows, the old way of 20 odd new episodes shown over 40 weeks meant the audience had difficulty keeping up at times with the plot. Procedurals and sit coms don't need the audience to keep up to date with the plot but the recent success of programs like 24, Alias, Prison Break and Lost which need people to be upto date has helped switch the way TV markets these programs, if the audience isn't there, the advertisers wont fork out the big bucks to pay for quality shows.

And you can sell a DVD of the first half prior to the second half being broadcast, which allows fans to catch up.

Comparing a US run of 20+ episodes to a UK run of 10ish is a bit disingenuous.
