To protect or not to protect NCB?

Right well finally my policy renewal with Admiral has come through. Multicar policy same as before, 7 years protected NCB. £100 cheaper than last year on the STi :) And a good £100 cheaper on the Peugeot too!

Strange given that Admiral were really expensive on their online quotes. O well.. I intend to ring them to try and get it cheaper anyways :D

I found out how much it saved me in a bit of a bizarre way in 2008. I hit a Mitsu Colt pretty hard in a straight 1-1 rear collision (driving a Mk 1 fabia). Colt was likely a write off to give some impression of damage (every rear part, even a wheel) although I only needed bumper/lights/carrier etc... so I get it repaired and renew my insurance through Admiral thinking that's the end of it.

9 Months later I get a call from Admiral - it turns out that the driver was banned from driving due to medical grounds and they had won the argument. I received a refund (£170) but it still counted as an accident so my refund was the amount extra I had paid in renewal for being at fault + NCB refund.

For the record I was 24 driving a Fabia vrs in 2008, Admiral renewal was ~500 so this accident was worth a really rough premium of 30%. All cases are different etc... I present this as an anecdote only :) Admiral wanted £40 for NCB protection, last year, I took it. For my wife we didn't though, they wanted £120 for her.
