So, I am a happy 60GB owner and the unit has been trouble free for 2+ yrs (since buying on MM here, actually)....

Thing is, with all the doom and gloom stories around dieing PS3s, I am wondering whether this is a good chance to migrate to the new Slim ? (Especially now, as my toddler feels that the PS3 is her DVD player......the unit is starting to get some serious daily use !)

Bottom line, I never actually use the PS2 compatibility, although do have a couple of PS1 games which I believe play on most PS3s anyway.....but I do like the card reader, as i can play AVCHD files straight from my HD Camcorder.....but then a USB reader would do the same !

Seems that I can manage £180 trade-in against a Slim (and sure that figure won't last long !) so is it worth the £70 outlay......for peace of mind in warranty terms, better 'settled' tech and less power consumption ?

Anyone gone through this process ? How does one go about migrating account(s) - I also have a US account for occasional cheaper purchases etc ;)

Appreciate thoughts....

Shop around and the outlay can quite easily go down to £50, I say go for it, at least then you have the piece of mind of a brand spanking new warranty. Plus you'll be 'upgrading' to a Dual Shock 3 pad as part of the deal.

I would probably go for it if it was me. You get some nice benefits for £70 - another DS3 controller which I guess you could flog for some cash back to drop the £70 to about £50, new warranty, lower power consumption, less heat, less noise and maybe even a free game with your new Slim model if the trade-in Slim has one. If you don't use the backwards compatability much then I guess it shouldn't be a problem, but if you start feeling all nostalgic and miss it then you could just pick up a cheap PS2 for about £40 later on.

Apparently there is not much difference other than the size, I was hoping the new one would be a bit less noisy but the reviews on a large jungle retailer suggest not.

I would say mine is quieter than any PS3 i have had or used, but some seem to be slightly louder when first switched on, but after a period use say an hour or so the older ones get louder.

My Slim was epically quiet when I first got it - but now it's louder, and has the irritating tendancy to make "crack" noises before and after use due to the plastic expanding and contracting. Doesn't bother me much though as it's still half as quiet as my Xbox :P

I did this on release day of the Slim and another big bonus for me is how quiet the PS3 Slim is compared to my 60GB. Also I have noticed my lounge doesn't get as hot when playing games now.

I paid £73.99 and got a dualshock 3 for my old sixaxis and a copy of Batman Arkham Asylum thought it was quite a good deal as my console was bought on launch so was 2.5 years old.

If you still have the old controller and a DS as well that you can keep to get two DS controllers, and won't miss the additional built in USB and card reader, and do not want to put Linux on it, and don't need PS2 support just yet and fancy a slim unit, using less power and you can find a decent deal for say £60 or less then go for it..

But, remember if your 60BG model does die, and you like all the features of your old fat 60GB model, then Sony will replace for £128 and you'll get a new 60GB model... But you'll have to fight for a longer then 3 month warranty with Sony customer care.

You do get a larger HDD with the slim but to be honest, I've got a 500Gb and I've filed 200GB already with games, downloads, saves and a few movies, so HDD can go quickly. Much prefer to put my own HDD in. But thats me personally.

The lower power usage is a plus mind, and as for USB you can always do as I've done, and add a USB keyboard with USB hub on the back, it worked for me..... Gives me additional USB ports, as for card reader, you need to work out if you'll miss it or not.

All good thoughts, thanks :)

Must admit I am erring towards the trade......not really fussed about HDD capacity as I don't store much more than game installs/downloads and saves etc. All other media happily streams over the network from NAS or PCs that are on.....
Power consumption is a driver, I guess - mad electric bills, so every little helps....and the USB ports are unlikely to be an issue (although I do wish there was 1 or more on the rear of these things !)
I guess warranty is key.....and peace of mind thereof - 1yr stated and a good case to argue 2yrs, per EU rules :p

To be honest I have a 80GB ps3 and will be getting a stand alone Blu ray player when the one I want is released. So I personally don't see any point in up grading myself.

Don't do it! You have the best version of the PS3 and the nicest looking one by far.

Surely you can buy some form of extended warranty? Did you try signing up to continuous play?

ive been thinking the same thing but decided to keep my fat 40gig version ive never had a problem with it (touch wood) , i cant justify paying the extra for something that is pretty much identical apart from the design, ive also upgraded my hd anyway to 120gig ,

if you have not had problems with it why change?
