Remember to buy offical Sony products or you'll be voiding your warrenty

Not using Official Sony Components? Your warranty is voided!

A gamer claims that Sony's customer support have relayed that his PS3 warranty is void because he used a GENERIC BRAND of component cables and not the official Sony ones. Reps say that they will only replace the console for $150 as a result.

Just got off the phone with Sony Support. Because I have a generic brand of component cables, instead of officially licensed Sony components, Sony has voided the warrantee on my PS3 and will only replace it for $150 dollars!

Their product fails, yet they wiggle out of responsibility. Yeah Im sure that component cables can kill a system. and even if that were the case. What does that say about the system if it can be killed so easily.

So now my system boots up and sits there with a blank screen.

Thank god I kept the receipt. ****** allows for exchanges for 90 days or full refund.

Surely there has to be some sort of law against them doing that, unless they can prove that it was the cables and not the PS3 itself.

Sounds like complete BS to me! I don't know about US law, but I'm sure there's no way that Sony could enforce that over here even if it was written in smallprint somewhere that the warranty would be void if you didn't use official Sony products. Theres a lot of third party stuff which comes out for consoles under licence too so how would they get around that?

VSMILE>Sony>Nintendo>Microsoft ;)

I cant believe its true - but if it is shame on Sony

I have a sneaky suspicion that the OP wasnt the whole story however.

Just out of interest - is the PS3 end of the cable a generic connector then? I always thought everyone put on a different connector (even though tv end has to be standard) so that you HAD to buy a "branded" cable (even if it isnt Sony's own, its a PS3 cable etc)

Must be one of the first if so - X360, PS2,PS1, Xbox all had slightly different connectors on the back didnt they?

Not buying it either... sounds highly unlikely.

If it were the UK, it would be unenforceable. Not sure about US law, but it is mostly close to UK law in most areas.

My thoughts exactly... I think we can safely say that tis ones been BUSTED! ;)

Eh, so if you were using say one of those 3rd party joypads you can get, and your PS3 broke they would say tough **** as your warranty's void as you were not using a Sony pad, WTF!!!!.

The only problem is you can't get a Sony component cable just now.

I was under the impression that PS2 cables work and in JAPAN & USA you could buy a PS2 component cable.

This also makes me wonder where you woudl stand with HDD's... I havent looked myself but I think theres details in the instructions telling you how to change the HDD, but as far as I'm aware Sony don't make 2.5" SATA HDD's or indeed any HDD's???
