I watched 'that video' last night - I'm not sure about Tom Cruise going mad, but it appears most other people are!?

OK, he's talking about stuff we are not familiar with (eg: acronyms scientologists would be familiar with etc), and he's passionate and obviously slightly carried away at times about the topic (scientology), but I couldn't see anything particularly odd or worrying in there. And yet seemingly everyone, on the back of the video, are calling him a 'complete loon' or worse...

Then we had 'The Sun' jumping in yesterday with an article showing Tom Cruise making 'another scientology rant'. When you watch the video they posted he's simply at a scientology event getting an award and making quite a polite/simple speech.

Has infact everyone else gone mad? Is this a massive 'emperor's new clothes' syndrome where everyone is simply jumping on board with what the media say they should think about Mr Cruise, rather than actually thinking about it?

All very odd, and a little alarming to be honest!

Hmm good topic, I see what your getting at. All we know about scientology is what we are told or able to read about it. No-one here for example has actually been in a church and witnessed what they do so for all we know there could be good sections and bad just like any other religion.

Unfortunately the information i have seen seems to suggest that it is a load of crap and it's sole purpose is to make money and control(like most religions IMO!) so they only get this negative press.

We should send someone in 007 stylee and see what really goes on!:D

I thought it was somewhat delusional...the bits where he was saying 'we are the only ones who can help' etc etc - they seem to have an unreasonable sense of superiority. But as has been said, there's little wrong with Scientology that isn't wrong with any other religion.
I didn't think the recent video was too bad - he wasn't foaming at the mouth or anything. The other videos (chat shows etc) where he's talking about psychiatry worry me more.

Indeed, sounds almost as bad a Christianity.

Oh, from what I've heard of scientology it sounds very odd...

BUT, we don't know how much of this Tom Cruise (or other scientologists) buy into.

The upshot of the video is that they are trying to help and improve people/the world around them. If they do or don't achieve this so what... But hey, at least they're trying I guess! Which is more than most of the poo-poo'ers do :)

If it's true that he's second in command at the church of scientology, then I don't think he's mad at all - just a shrewd operator operating a pyramid scheme.

Agreed, he seemed weird in that video.... but then I think it was blown out of proportion due to the lack of news.... it will all blow away

I don't think he seemed particularly weird, really... He was talking about stuff we are not familiar with, and very passionate about it, but it doesn't deserver any attention or fuss.

It's just the media jumping on it, and unfortunately too many 'sheep' buying into it... IMHO...

I think you know very little about either Christianity or scientology based on that statement.

Let me summarise all religions... Something magical happened to create us... We're special, you're not.

Did I miss anything? :)

I think you know very little about either Christianity or scientology based on that statement.

I know plenty about both, And I agree with his statement.

Scientology is a belief we were put here by aliens...

Christianity is a belief we were created by some all powerful God being, "moulded in his own image"

To be honest. I think the aliens option has a more scientific basis

what makes me laugh about scientology is that its founder is quoted as saying "Y'know, we're all wasting our time writing this hack science fiction! You wanna make real money, you gotta start a religion!"
and the guy had a massive dependency on opium
its not exactly a good M.O. for some1 starting a religion

The simple fact that he constantly asserts his 'team' is better than the rest 'and you can be part of the group' or be on the inside, says to me he is in a state of disordered narcissism and delusional grandeur.

Now, you may say he just comes across as slightly arrogant, but his statements make specific people feel as though they are inferior and he is using low level psychotherepy methods to persuad the weak minded people that they need to come join him (becuase their lives are negative - and he is the positive).....
Here are some pointers for a psycho analysis of Narcissistic personality disorder which I think is one of the traits he displays in his own headspace :

1.) Overreacts to criticism, becoming angry or humiliated
2.) Uses others to reach goals
3.) Exaggerates own importance
4.) Entertains unrealistic fantasies about achievements, power, beauty, intelligence or romance
5.) Has unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment
6.) Seeks constant attention and positive reinforcement from others
7.) Is easily jealous
8.) Has a sense of entitlement
9.) Is interpersonally exploitative
10.) Lacks empathy
11.) Displays arrogant behavior
12.) Displays haughty behavior

His rants are also annoying as they imply everyone is stupid or uneducated, which is very far from the truth. In fact, some of his scientology promotional videos and speeches are enough to put people off cults for life (which is a great thing)

If he spent as much time and money really helping the less well off people in the world, instead of feeding it into this money sucking new age religion, he would find the happinness he seems to crave (but will never get) from this alien cult.

For me personally, I think the guy is just getting further up his own backside and creating a delusional world where he imagines everyone has 'issues' and needs the space god to come down and get rid of their clingons. He is delusional, he has meglomania and he is a control freak who will also go on to develop some sort of God like complex and evntually burn out and go into a recluse state or realise the Scientology 'team' can't fulfill his needs anymore and it's time to find a new fad to latch his over inflated and unstable ego onto..... The sooner the better I say - but i don't really care about the guy or what happens to him, I just care that his rants actually get weak minded individuals and easily led people who need a new fix or need to 'be loved' by something to join the sect.

There is one huge, major difference between scientology and other religions, and that is known beginnings. We know exactly where the 'religious' text for scientology came from, it was written by L Ron Hubbard (who is widely quoted as saying the best way to make money is to start a religion) in 1952.

This is vastly different to a 2000 or more year old text that, while some people claim to know how it was created, nobody really does.

If you knew anything about the scientific method you'd understand that it's entirely the wrong tool to even consider examining either question....
