TomTom ONE - route planning

Since I've started learning my way around the TomTom ONE, I've noticed that it does not let you do route planning/calculation unless you have a GPS signal.

You can however use the "Advanced Planning" to get calculations of simple A-to-B routes. AND you can hook up to TomTom Home and the "My ONE" interface to do any kind of route planning despite having no GPS signal.

That said, I'm confused about something. The other day I discovered that I could do more complicated routes (with waypoints) via "Itinerary Planning" without the computer and without a GPS signal by choosing "Start Navigation" from the options of "Itinerary Planning". It would just use the last known location as the starting point.

BUT today, I tried the same thing, and now all of a sudden it's not letting me and says "Waiting for GPS signal".

Does the TomTom ONE give up "waiting for a GPS signal" after a time period OR is there a way that you make it to allow you to do "Itinerary Planning" without a GPS signal??? If there is a way, then apparently yesterday I did that without realizing how I did it.

Hope that made sense... sort of complicated to explain.

Thanks

EDIT: I'll just clarify that it is of course allowing me to build the itinerary, but it's not going ahead with the route calculation without a GPS signal... yesterday it was doing the latter just using last known location as the starting point. It was really handy to be able to review the route inside before even getting in the car (without having to use the computer interface).

I found that when I switched it on it said "Waiting for GPS signal" until I planned a route. E.g. Navigate to > address > postcode (and put in a known postcode). It then connected to GPS and planned my route fine.

Thanks for reply, but I'm not talking about using it in the car when GPS signals are available. What I mean is planning and reviewing more complicated routes at home (and therefore indoors and away from GPS coverage).

In that case the fact that it insists on awaiting the signal gets in the way; it refuses to actually calculate a route without a GPS signal. And again, I'm aware that routes can be calculated via "Advanced Planning", but this function does not allow for multiple waypoints.

Also what I want to do can be done when interfaced with the computer, but that's a bit of a hassle.

But again, full access to all route calculation modes without a GPS signal was working for me yesterday and I don't know how I got it in that mode. Anyone know?

I'm not sure what you mean TBH, I have my TomTom One st next to me, I switched it on, it is waiting for the GPS signal but I could still plan a route without having to wait.

Just tap the screen, hit 'navigate to' and it works just the same as when it has got a signal, you can add waypoints etc. It just navigates from the last place it had the signal.

Hi, thanks for reply. Is it also proceding to calculate the route, so that you can review the route it chose, etc?... all without first fetching a GPS signal? Because that is what I was able to do with it yesterday, now all of a sudden it just waits for GPS before doing any route calculating. Only option I have is to "cancel" route planning (or step out and find open sky for signals).

There must be some "mode" or something that's making it act differently now.

But it sounds like your TomTom ONE is doing what I was able to do with mine yesterday. I'm baffled.

Yep, I just did a route, added some waypoints, and it calculated the route and I was able to review the route without the GPS signal.

Ok, thanks for confirming that. This is bizarre. It just decided all of sudden that it's not going to calculate routes without GPS. And the "Advanced Planning" feature is only partly useful because you cannot add multiple waypoints as you can from "Itinerary Planning".

<scratches head>

Ok, I just figured out how it get's into the mode where it does not insist on having GPS signals:

Step outside allowing it to fetch the signal, then without switching it off step back inside. After that, you can switch it off and use it again later and calculate routes to hearts content in a concrete bunker.

Basically, don't switch it off while it has a GPS signal (well I haven't tested that yet, because I want it to stay in the mode it's in now). This is wierd.

EDIT: Arg. After a while it reverted back to the mode where it insists on a GPS signal. But stepping outside for a signal, then back inside again gets it back to the other mode. A bit silly. I still really like this navigator; really good functions and looks really sharp in the car, but it has a couple of minor quirks. I hope they patch this in the software soon.
