Tongue Frenectomy (Not quite medical I hope?)

Hey all,

I currently have something called ankyloglossia (tongue tied) which is where you have an extended frenulum which restricts the tongues movement. It's pretty restricting in that I can barely stick my tongue out or even lick my lips. My girlfriends also quite keen on me getting this done for reasons undisclosed :o.

Usually this is removed as a baby but for some reason it was not in my case!

I'm looking at getting this cut (quite a common procedure?) and it seems it's quite a simple operation.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had this done before and how it was gone about? I'm just thinking it's a case of phoning my doctor and making an appointment and going from there and probably getting a referral to the hospital?

Any comments appreciated :)

If I were you I'd request an extended cut to enable further tongue dexterity and movement, on medical grounds of course ;)
And good luck with the op :)

You mean more than the normal cut I would receive? :p

Sorry, had to do it:

Looks fairly routine - good luck!

Yeah, although apparently it is a bugger to eat and drink afterwards though!

Bloody doctors should have just done it while I was a newborn :p.

Be just like having your banjo slackened

Haha, not quite as extreme. I can't even stick my tongue out properly, lift it up, point it, roll it, tongue my teeth, lick my lips and so forth. It's pretty annoying :p. And quite a self conscious thing to have at certain times!

I actually had this done fairly recently; October I think it was. The waiting list for the oral department at the hospital I went to was quite long though. Basically I was told they're fully booked for weeks, and I'd just have to wait until they contacted me. Fortunately it only took about 3 weeks to get it looked at though as a spot opened up, and not long after I was in for the surgery (I was in and out of the hospital within an hour for the actual op.). First of all you need to see your GP though, who'll start the process off by writing to your hospital for you.

I don't think this is the usual case, but there was a period of about 2 hours or so after the anaesthetic wore off where I was in quite a lot of pain! Laying on my bed, driving my face into the pillow and wishing I hadn't had it done sort of pain. But this didn't last very long, as I said, and later on in the evening I was talking--albeit a little slurred--and the pain was minimal. So don't let this put you off at all! I don't regret it one bit.

I was a bit shocked at first as, for some reason, I thought they'd just snip it through the middle to give a bit more freedom, but they removed the whole thing!

Awesome post, thanks! I love OcUK, there's always someone who's been in a similar situation!

I'm assuming it's not too far removed from a trip to the dentist and having a filling really? Just some local anaesthetic and someone fiddling around in your mouth :p

And yeah, I assumed I have to see my GP first to get a referral to the hospital e.t.c. I should have done this earlier, always put it off thinking it was quite a big deal and at the end of the day it might be a bit silly hassling my GP about! :o

Yes it's quite akin to a dentist visit actually, not a big deal at all! Although since it's your tongue it might bleed a fair bit. I didn't even notice until I got up after they'd finished and saw a table of bloodied gauze! It didn't bleed at all afterwards though. Eating was a bit of a pain for the first week; a sandwich which usually takes me 2 minutes to eat took about 20! That was a major downer because I enjoy my food, but couldn't eat anywhere near as much as I would have liked. It wasn't really causing pain, more of the annoyance of confusing the food with the stitches under my tongue. It was just fear of the combination of getting food stuck there and eating my stitches, quite silly really!
