Just been watching the Top 10 places to invest (outside of London) on TV and was happy to see Southampton at number 5! Hmmm maybe i should rent this place out!

Top 10:

10 Manchester : From post-industrial decline to vibrant modern city centre living

9 Leeds : A massive student population means a lucrative rental market

8 Bristol : Families will rush to live near Bristol's good quality new schools

7 Belfast : From troubles to investment and regeneration

6 Reading : The UK's Silicon Valley attracts rich young professionals

5 Southampton :With one in ten people a student, letting is a good moneyspinner

4 Brighton : A city full of DINKYs means good money for property investors

3 Edinburgh : With a rising population and great culture you can't go wrong here

2 Cambridge : Students and commuters have led to a booming rental market

1 Oxford : Wealthy students, families and young professionals: a perfect mix

Lots of big name cities that have had a lot of money poured into them over the recent years!

'investment' is not all its cracked up to be TBH - Stratford was a good investment a little while ago because of the olympics and sure enough it was. But no matter how much money has been put into Stratford, it is still a hole.

Good investment != nice place

Thats interesting to know......I never knew Reading was the Silicon Valley of the UK. I just thought it was the ****hole valley of the UK. Maybe I should consider buying a house there then?

I cant believe Liverpool isnt on the list. As 2008 City of Culture, theres sure to be huge amounts of cash invested in its infrastructure. Cheap-ish house prices (lets face it, no houses are cheap these days) can only improve surely?!?!

Bristol in at number 8, not surprising really, theyve demoilished half of the town centre (this isnt an exageration) and are building a huge mall like thingy there, weve allready got 2 malls, one thats guna be literally a mintutes walk from the new one (the galleries) and another thats 15 minutes away by car (cribbs, i work there when i live 2 minutes drive from the galleries :D)

I had to go there today, what a mess that city centre is in, miles and miles of roads being dug up and trafficlights with temp roundabouts e.t.c Was a right nightmare!

Gotta say Edinburgh is nice, was there at the weekend. It has random mountains in the middle of the city!

City --- City -- CIty --- BIG hill --- City --- City -- Big hill with castle... city.. big bridges!!

Reading is a hell hole

Check out the M4 Corridor. Most notably, in my opinion, Microsoft have offices in Reading :)

Surprised Sheffield isn't in there. Big student population, massive rebuilding project going on at the moment, and still relatively cheap.

Reading is the telecoms capital of the UK, lots of skilled jobs there (here). Not to mention a premiership footy team ;). There is a gread deal of investment going into the town center as well as direct Chunnel links planned in the next 5 yrs.

Reading is not a hell-hole! I was unaware that it was refered to as 'silicon-valley' of the UK but now i think of it there is Micrsoft and the nice Computer Associates building located in Reading. The university is excellent in every way, with a great campus and plenty of nice people. Vibrant drinking culture, etc.
