Torrents knock out my router

Ever since I've used torrents they seem to knock out my router (Netgear WGT624v3), however it seems to be getting worse lately. Usually it's fine while I leave it downloading but after the download is complete and I shut down BitComet or uTorrent then I have to reset the router to be able to access the web. However its happened a couple of times during downloading. Is there anything I can do to stop this cos its a real pain going downstairs and resetting it all the time. Only thing I can think of is a firmware upgrade but thats a pita cos i'd have to take my desktop downstairs just to try it. Any ideas?

Why don't you download the bin file, then bring the router upstairs and plug it into your PC?

Mohammed to the mountain surely?

It's a memory issue and all the sub £100 routers suffer from it, i've gone for a Cisco as i was fed up of it and never have any problems now. Can have 20 or so torrents downloading with hundreds of peers and seeds and happily browse or play games at the same time.

One thing to make sure is that you haven't allowed the torrent client to use all your upload.

Change the router. I had very similar problems with too many connections crashing my previous routers, would happen muiltiple times a day sometimes when using torrents. Bought a Linksys WRT54GL and flashed it with the Tomato firmware. Set the max connections allowed along with some settings to drop unused connections and now my connection is 100% stable. I've not had to restart the router due to loss of internet caused by torrents in over two weeks since buying the Linksys.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the only way is to buy a new router as I've set the no. of connections/limited speeds etc correctly, and as i'm a student lamo with no money I'm afraid I'm just gonna have to keep walking downstairs:(:o

Setting the number of connections in the torrent application will most likely not fix the problem as the number of connections at the router (and before it gets to the application) is what is causing the problem. Dropping the number of connections in the torrent application may mask the problem though.

I had that router before and had the exact same problem. Bought a Linksys WRT54GL (£30) and flashed with a different firmware and it has an uptime from since I bought it months ago! That's with multiple torrents going every night.

Advanced>Conntrack/Netfilter

TCP Timeout settings. Adjust the time in seconds for each type of connection.

My sub £100 router doesn't have that problem, I can have loads for Torrent's seeding and downloading without any problem and buying a Cisco router is usually a bit over the top of home usage. Not only are they quite expensive they are usually a fair bit harder to configure then your normal home router.

As mentioned the main thing you need to do is limit how much bandwidth you allow for upload and downloads. I would recommend staying under 60% of available upload bandwidth if you want to be able to surf the net normally, and max 80% of the download bandwidth.

I did quite a bit of research at the time and didn't find one that looked like it would be able to cope under full load unaffected. My Zyxel for instance kept resetting itself when it ran out of memory due to the amount of incoming connections rgeardless of config and the reviews i could find of others mentioned slow downs etc. The Cisco admittedly was a bit of overkill and a right PITA to setup but it was the only one i could guarantee would take anything i chucked at it.

Have you tried a different program as well.

My housemate used bitcomet and the router would regularly crash and hang but it was fine when I used utorrent.
