Hi everyone, i'm a total n00b at this game, looking to build my own PC around september time to edit my first short film on.

I know the very basics and have plenty of tine to learn so i was wondering what sort of rig i would need?

I am obviously looking for a very large amount of space and Ram. What would you recommend?

I was thinking in the region of 1000 gig space, 2Mb ram, a top of the line video card and a top of the range, widescreen monitor?

Any recommendations?

Cheers

I've never edit'd video before, so take my advice with a pinch of salt but... you basically want a fast CPU, lots of ram and fast hard disk space. Graphics cards aren't likely to have much impact on editing speed. So something along the lines of

4800X2 Amd processor
2gb ram
2x 300gb hard disk in raid
DVD writter

other elements are less important in my opinon.

Cheers guys, Geffen that was the kind of think i was thinking.

philio16 - 2Mb RAM indeed sir, very tasty :D The duel monitor idea is a good idea, will i be able to afford 2 top minitors under my budget?

If you're just going to edit video, video cards won't make much difference but a dual screen is very usefull. Also if you're using premiere or anything openGL a matrox editing card would be very useful (realtime rendering) look at the Matrox RT.X100 Xtreme Pro.

Lots of RAM maybe more than 2 gigs and a fast processor and video eats loads of hard disk space but 1000 gigs is a bit overkill imo.

OK thanks.

Thought this was specifcally for video stuff :D

i just thought you would get more help in the hardware section, they do a lot of speccing up pc`s for people in there - including prices (OCUK stock only of course)

Generally I`d get 2gig ram minimum, a dual core cpu- preferably mid to high end, not sure about gfx cards, i`d also get a massive hard disk - 500gig would be good, but 250gig minimum , dual monitors would also be nice , either that or a nice 24" widescreen :)

Conroe is the new processor core that Intel are building and due to be made available in july i think

its dual core (2 processors in one) and is meant to be very fast , especially for the price

For video editing... IMO your best off just buying a prebuilt system with some great editing software.

20" 2GHz iMac Core Duo with 2GB RAM. This comes with iMove HD video editing software and iDVD DVD authoring software. Both are very good.

I would also recommend Final Cut Express HD and a Lacie 500GB external Firewire 400.

Video quick tour of FCE

Make sure you have a MiniDV camcorder with AV in/out and DV in/out (e.g. Canon MVX460) and a 14" TV to view the video as you edit it on a "proper" interlaced screen.
