Yes its a spec me a car for £1000 thread!!

Well unfortunately my Accord Type-R is being written off after it was vandalised on my door step. Im thinking about replacing it with £1000 run around. Im 6ft 5" tall so headroom and legroom needs to be in abundance. Really dont want to spend anymore then £1000, i just want a year or so of cheap motoring to allow me to get some real funds together for maybe an Evo or similar next year.

Im 25 and because of my recent claim have 0 NCB, no points also. So it needs to be insurance friendly too. I do approx 35miles a day commuting to work so it needs to be good on fuel. So what do we reckon?

Cheers

Mondeo mk2 of some sorts will no doubt be recommended so i'll get in there before the early risers.

Primera GT? Been eyeing these up myself, seem highly rated, reliable as any Nissan should be, and insurance group 9. Not great on fuel, but you can't have it all :p.

TBH I'd just scour your local paper, and buy anything that's in relatively good nick, makes the right noises and still moves when it's supposed to.

It's what I did for my run about car, a P reg Rover 216 for all of £500. I'm also 25, 0 NCB and no points and with a half decent postcode that costs me £550 to insure - although I've only been driving a year.

You could easily get something, insure tax and mot it all for a grand. Should be easy that. Just scan ebay and autotrader. People just want rid of their cheap cars to clear space and be done with them. Some decent cars are listed for as little as £300 which can even be knocked down. I've seen good nick under 100k mile Mondeos go for <£300. Low insurance and your sorted.

Mondeo 1.8/2.0 or Accord 2 litre I would have thought. The 2.2 in either 16v or vtec format will be thirsty compared with Mondeo. Otherwise 406/Xantia? Mondeo is the best all round bet tho. Ghia X with leather would probably be possible but the best bet may just be the newest, best condition bog standard one. Depends how fussed you are about spec I guess. If fuel is the main concern and you want to run something large and cheap consider going down the DERV route or perhaps even look for an LPG mondeo? However, with only £1000 to spend you might struggle to find a decent LPG Mondeo. Note to illustrate the difference in fuel economy you might be interested to know my Accord 2.2 estate cost about £55 to fill up and would do about 330 miles to a tank if mainly used on motorway. My Xantia HDI estate did 500 miles yesterday and still claims to have quarter of a tank left from the £60 I put in the other day! So I should get 550 miles out of the tank I would guess? You can get a lot of car for £1000 so set your heart on a model and then find a decent one.

I sold my MR2 recently as need to get some quick money, still needed a car to get work each day and ended up picking a 1997 P reg Honda Acord 1.8 up for £780. Brilliant condition, very reliable, years MOT, s/h etc.. check them out, comfy car to drive. Handling and power are terrible but hey cant really complain if it does the job :D

Primera GT. Im 6ft 3" and there is plenty of room for me too. Try and get yourself a saloon model though. They have a strut bar in the rear as well as the front plus they look a lot better too.
