Track Rod end replace- Vauxhall Vectra (1999)

if its like many other cars

grip track rod with spanner

unscrew track rod end

ofcouse its never going to be that easy because it will be well and truely stuck on, but thats the basic principle.. :D

Last time I replaced a track rod end ball joint I used a couple of ring/open spanners and a pair of molegrips and a track rod end splitter to separate the joint from the hub carrier using a big hammer :)
- using the aforementioned hammer, separate the rod end from the carrier then use the two spanners to first undo the locking nut on the rod end, then grip the steering rod with the molegrips to stop it rotating, then use a spanner to unscrew the track rod ball joint.

simple, ain't it?

Of course sometimes they are seized on and have to be heated to expand, or in the case of one car, cut off using an oxyacetylene torch :o

HINT: use some gaffa tape to mark the position of the lock nut on the rod- only unscrew it about one or half a turn. This way when you put the new track rod ball joint on your wheel alignment/tracking is more or less spot on; after which you can drive it to a garage to be checked and set properly.
