Just traded my car in against a 56 plate Fabia Sport and I'm amazed at the price I got for it. It was a 2000 (W Reg) Corsa 1.0 Envoy, 5 door model with the most basic of basic specs, no power steering, cassette radio etc. The one thing good about it is it had a decent service history and had only done 45k. Book value only 550, I got 800 for it! I paid 900 for it 3 years ago. 100 quid depreciation in 3 years is fantastic. Chuffed!

Well I paid 4200+ My Car for my fabia, 56 plate with all the toys, Air Con, 6 disc cd changer, heated mirrors, electric windows, remote central locking and alarm, sports seats and leather steering wheel, alloys, fogs etc, 25k on the clock with a full years warranty, full years MOT, full years TAX, a full service plus a years free AA Breakdown cover, and a set of new car mats. They were selling it for just over 5k so I think I got a good deal.

Assuming as much as a 10% budge margin on the new car, you probably got about £300-500 for the Corsa.

All they did was worked out you'd be really chuffed about getting a high tradein value and adjusted the figures to suit what they thought would make you buy.

And it worked.

Bump up the part exchange value with money left in the car you're looking at. Reduces the perceived loss so you're more likely to jump in to a deal. Car sales 101, did the same thing just this morning.
