Eko light is a simple yet, highly practical concept for traffic lights that not only helps preserve the environment by reducing pollution but promotes safer driving as well. Eko can be easily installed onto existing traffic light systems without much effort while significantly improving overall traffic dynamics.

There are many benefits of the Eko light, the main ones being:

Less pollution. Drivers can turn their engines off and cut carbon emissions while waiting for the green light.

Less fuel consumption
Turning off your vehicle while waiting on the traffic light can lower fuel consumption in the long run.

Less stress Since you know exactly
how long you have to wait you can sit back and clear your head for a while. No need to keep your foot on the gas. Relax.

Safer driving- With the Eko light both drivers and pedestrians can be fully aware of how much time they have left before the light changes and that way reduce the chance for potential traffic accidents.

Simple but great idea.

Older cars turning off and on again is not a good idea surely?

Would be good on the other colours also

On local roads you get to know how long it will be red for, but would be handy for those new to the area.

Could encourage people to jump it slightly if they can see there's no one on the other side and there's only a couple of bars left. Could also encourage traffic light grand prix style stuff.

I can see the positives too, though.

Dont some other countries have something similar already? iirc Egypt had there own version when I was there a few years back.

So basically you've got a timer for waiting for it to turn green... good old traffic light grand prix made simpler! ;)

Also, cars at idle now don't really pollute that much these days... and stopping and turning off your engine surely creates more pollution?

That's a great idea.

But I recon people will start going when it's showing the last few bars to that they cross the line when it goes green.

Some traffic lights in Australia and lights in Canada have a system where they have a light several meters up the road that flashes when you don't have enough time to reach the lights before it changes to red.

This system looks much better as it shows the time between red to green and not green to red, which people just speed up so they can beat the lights.

Yep, in Saudi they have countdown timers that show the time remaining, although it's apparently put there not to reduce pollution (unsurprisingly), but because drivers there regularly get impatient and creep through red lights. My step-dad's recently written-off year-old Mazda 6 will attest to that.

They have countdown timers in Bangalore which were also put in place to not only stop people getting impatient but also so peds can see when they're likely to get run over.

What's wrong with that? If anything it will mean more cars will get across and there is nothing illegal if they are crossing the line when it's green.

Good idea, but this will only work on these new cars that have a seamless stop-start system on the engine.

There is no way I am turning the engine off at every traffic light in my 9 year old car.
I also agree that this is like having racing lights for traffic light GP's.
