Hi all,

Some of you may know the record label 'anjunabeats' (as per sig)...

It's responsible for a huggggge catalog of some of the finest music on the planet (imo)...

They sign up great uplifting and progressive trance artists for example.

What I'd like to say though is that trance isn't what a lot of people think it is. When you say the word "trance" to someone they automatically think of utter garbage like Cascada and Basshunter...

This isn't proper trance music!!!

I think if you're one of those people who don't listen to trance much that you should perhaps listen to a few tunes from artists like Above and Beyond...

I'll get the ball rolling with a few tunes which may make you're perception of trance change somewhat... ;)

Some sad and some uplifting tunes there, if you like any of these I can recommend some other artists who make similar (there are many) or if not, well oh meh, least I tried to spread the love :)

edit - if you like these tunes and want to listen to some more Above and Beyond are airing their weekly radio show at 7pm - 9pm gmt time : http://www.di.fm/mp3/trance.pls

Ah youngster - you're so late to the party :D

Above and Beyond are great but... - look up:

Future Sound of London
Orbital
Jam and Spoon
Cafe del Mar - Energy 52
Laurent Garnier
Marmion
The Orb
Underworld
Cosmic Baby
Chicane
Way Out West
Y Traxx
Lustral
Nalin & Kane
Agnelli & Nelson
Binary Finary
Paul Van Dyk
Humate
Blank & Jones
Gouryella
Lange
Lost Tribe
Matt Darey
Mauro Picotto
Push
Salt Tank
Steve Morley
Age of Love...

The list goes on.

All the trance coming out now is just old stuff rehashed. You want the good stuff, hunt down albums like Gatecrasher Wet, early Slinky, Cream, Global Undergrounds by Sasha, Digweed, Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, Paul Oakenfold, Deep Dish, Daren Emmerson. Find stuff by Satoshi Tomiie, Sander Kleinenberg, Anthony Pappa, Seb Fontain (early stuff).

Hunt down the early Northern Exposure CDs, especially 1 and 3. There is so much out there and the modern stuff just doesn't have the depth nor the originality that it used to.

EDIT - sorry just read that back - a little pretentious, but I've been a DJ for many years - since about 2000 - I'm a little jaded with electronic music these days. Boo - I think I'm getting old!

These days I'm into a a few producers -

Above and Beyond , Sasha, Gabriel and Dresden, Smith and Pledger, Daniel Kandi, Matt Hardwick, Super8 and Tab, Gareth Emery, Dan Stone, Sean Tyas, Simon Patterson, John O'Callighan, John Askew, Mat Zo, Lange to name a few...

Really loving Mat Zo's producing at the moment though - really something else :)

I really am late to the trance party tbh. I used to listen to quite a few of those producers when I was 16 (10 years ago) but now it just sounds dated and generic... Trance has definitely evolved and it's got richer for it I think. Those producers I mentioned have a lot more modern sounds than the list you mentioned I think... It's almost like a different genre of music altogether. Trance has by its very nature evolved and is continuing to diversify in so many ways at a pretty quick rate.

While all of these are top artists, I would not consider any of them trance.

But on a similar tip, check out Leftfield, both albums are great post-party. :)

Well above and beyond definitely are. They've got a weekly radio show called Trance around the World :D

Infact if any of you are interested it starts at 7pm and ends 9pm - and you can listen to it - albeit in a not so great quality 96kbps - on di.fm.

Link http://www.di.fm/mp3/trance.pls

I'd be interested to see what you think to the trance on that show SteveO, give it a listen for half an hour or so if you want and don't wanna listen to the whole thing - might be interesting for you to see how the music has evolved today :)

infact the tunes that are playing at the mo are bloody good :)

I am a big fan of trance and have been for years.. Not listened to much lately tho.. But my ipod has tones of tracks on it.. Oceanlab are fantastic reasonably new talent.. I am even upgrading my sound system in my car to play some great trance music.. Only problem is errr.. it generally... errr makes me drive a little.. errr faster... :o

Nice, I just got into producing it, it's great fun, been 3 months so far but I've finally started working on a tune I'm gonna finish this time, it's hard but rewarding work, a long road ahead but as long as you enjoy it it's great :)

Daniel Kandi is a great remixer, check this out -

Very very well produced and amazing track!

Yeah got that tune, tis awesome indeed :)

and Buck, the melody in Sirens of the Sea sends chills to my bones everytime I hear it, prefer the A+B club mix, really pumping and melodic, just bliss :)

This tune is by one of my favourite producers of the moment and I think this tune he released last year is my favourite of 2009 -

It's by a Russian producer called Ilya Soloviev called "Leaving Planet" ... he's also got a tune I like very much called "Universal Universe"...

Here's a link to Leaving Planet - the use of a piano melody in trance songs just sends me into a state of heaven, such a simple melody but yet so powerful.

Goosebumps:

It's pretty sad when a genre's best days were a dozen years ago.

Tho atleast some of us were around to enjoy it at the time.

That's such a sweepingly ridiculous statement. Trance has grown and matured over the years and is the best its ever been right now...

You only have to listen to some of the radio shows on http://www.trancearoundtheworld.com/ to recognise this.

If you like Ashes, you should youtube "Oceanlab" - some great tunes from the vocal alias of Above and Beyond ....

The last (and first :p) good event I went to was Dance Valley so when I go to smaller one's here in the UK they all seem pants! Above and Beyond are one of my favourite DJ's at the moment though so I might just check it out :)

wicked tune mate, love it :)

If any of you like Space (as in the Universe etc.) and trance then I'm hopeful you'll love this tune - it's called Buzz (Buzz talk mix) which was released last year on the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing.

It's a great tune, made even better by the buzz talk remix and the video is excellent. But this is one of the reasons why I love trance anyway because there are a lot of elements in the tunes (particularly if you listen to Above and Beyond) of all the Earth and Universe's natural cosmos - Earth, Fire, Wind and Rain etc.

Tunes like "Miracle" talk about the impact Global warming is having on the planet and it's a sad melodic about how it's too late for us to do anything about it unless we look within ourselves to change things.

Buzz is just a tune which takes me on an orbit of our planet everytime I listen to it. Great artistic work :)

(p.s if anyone can tell me how to do the youtube thumbnail posts instead of this text link be much appreciated)

smr - what do you think of John O'Callaghan - Find Yourself? I absolutely love it, the vocals are immense.

it's ok, not one of my favourites though...

I like one of John's latest remixes ( Gulf - Impossible )

Here:

And regarding Trance and Space some of you may have missed it in the news but Above and Beyond played out Virgin Galactic 2 spaceship with "Buzz" when it was unveiled a couple of months ago...

Jono, one of the a+b DJs/producers had a conversation with Richard Branson about being the first DJs to play in Space.

How cool is that on a scale of 1-10? :D

wow :o I hadn't realised how big this thread had got - or that it would progress into something like this. Great stuff everyone ;)

I've got some tunes to hook up but still don't know how to link them in as youtube videos instead of text links - any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can contribute to this thread :)
