Transfer SSD storage from old macbook air to new one

My wife's MacBook air is showing it's age, trackpad is barely usable and the screen blacks out every now and then. It's used for work so time to replace. I know sweet fa about macs hence a foray in here.

Just wondering if we could buy a 128GB new one and transfer the SSD over, as the old one has 500GB which would be nice to keep but the trade in value isn't great for the old one with 500GB (£140ish), especially compared with the premium in price to get 512GB in a new one.

Would swapping this a) be doable and b) void any warranty?

The SSD in the new MacBooks is totally different to the old ones, you can't transfer it.

You can buy a special external enclosure called the OWC Envoy for that old Macbook SSD. Unfortunately it's a proprietary SSD, so you can't buy any old external enclosure for it.

If the only reason to get an external enclosure is for data transfer to a new Mac then surely target disk mode is the way to go.

Depends on the exact model, but most new MacBooks have the storage soldered onto the logic board. Completely non-upgradable.

If it's an older Air then what Feek said.

This, or you can use the built in migration assistant to do this. Or time machine backup.
