I suspect you'll see Coutinho playing deep with Lallana ahead more than the opposite. Having Lallana and Coutinho both being comfortable in midfield and attack, we've got a lot of options in midfield and the attacking mid/wing areas.

The concern is the drop off in quality if and when Sturridge is injured. It looks like being our last bit of business but finding the right striker to add to our squad is going to a massive task and could potentially have massive consequences on how we do next season.

I've said it before but the hardest thing to replace about Suarez wasn't his ability but his versatility. There was no drop off in performance level regardless of where he was playing or what system we played. He could play on either wing, off the front, up front in a 2 or on his own and he was still the best player on the pitch.

The Express recons that Van Gaal is concerned with Vidal's knee, and isn't keen to press ahead with the transfer.

Take with a suitable pile of salt, of course.

Slowpoke! :p Everywhere is reporting this now (after Sampaoli's earlier interview).

Really hope the signs are positive for his knee and we press ahead with trying to sign him, but you can understand our cautious approach given what he'll cost.

Also, we might be haggling a bit with Juventus, trying to drive the price down, as we'll be taking a small gamble at the very least.

I don't think he was having a go....Just teasing you about the story already being widely reported.

I didn't actually know though, so thank you for posting. I think United obviously need signings, but it seems we aren't just rushing around throwing money everywhere.

With some players set to leave though, you'd think they need to get some more new faces in.

I'd agree entirely with this.

Theres no way that Sturridge can do 4 competitions throughout the whole season and without him up front we do undoubtedly lack punch. To pull off a good season I think we absolutely need another striker. However, who that should be, I just don't know. With the start of the season a matter of weeks away now, a deal needs to be done sooner rather than later. I personally think that the most likely deal looks to be Bony. Not the biggest name around but one which I would say has the most chance of going through before the season starts.

Well this is a relatively dull day for transfer gossip.

Shame they didn't drag the Suarez deal out like they did the Bale one last season.

I don't trust the club at all to adequately replace Suarez, they have had a good 6 - 12 months to target and assess a replacement / viable alternative, it looks at if this hasn't been done and given previous windows I'm a touch concerned that we won't get anyone decnent in. Look at how long the Moreno transfer is taking, he was highlighted as our 1st choice lb as soon as the season ended, 6 weeks later and we are still haggling with Sevilla.

Can and Markovic both look like very good deals, bags of potential but this season especially we need proven quaility and given Sturridges injury record I'd be concerned with just him if it was only the epl we were going for, thrown in a CL campaign aswell and we are asking for trouble.

Can't see us signing bony, 20 million is too much for someone that is essentially a younger version of lambert, and would appear to not fit into our 'plan a'

Sky reporting that Boro have agreed a deal to sign Adam Clayton from Huddersfield. If we can get him in I'll be very happy with our signings. Could still do with a right full back but not sure if the new guy Nsue can play there. I think our transfer dealings will have been perfect if we can get Vossen in too, he is keen to come but I don't see us splashing the cash on that one, they're asking for way more than we can afford.

I reckon we've got a decent squad this year and we've had a strong pre-season. I hope we get a good start at home on Saturday.

You wanted the club to pay whatever it took to sign Papathingy because he was our first choice CB target last season and look how that turned out. The club will set a value for a player and that figure won't be plucked from thin air, there will be reasoning behind it. Sevilla were reportedly demanding £20m for Moreno at the start of the window, it's now being reported that we're close to agreeing a deal for £14-15m.

Yes we need a striker but it's not like we've deliberately left it to the last moment, we nearly signed Remy but that fell through and for all we know the club are already in talks for the next target on the list but we just haven't heard about it yet.

This isn't football manager. The club know we need a striker and I'm sure there's good reason why we haven't got one yet and I'm equally sure we'll still sign one.

Someone has got there knickers in a twist :p

:o

Just read this thread. Had no idea I'd posted that last night. Or even been on the forums at 5am (wtf?!)

To be fair, I was drunk as hell... No idea how I managed to type in complete sentences to be honest. Looks like I was being a gigantic tool. :o

I'm full of optimism at the moment, happy with the signings so far :)

No, I said if he was identified as the no 1 target then we should get him in early, the hold up the wasn't fee it was his knee (which would have been identified in the medical, so amount he would have cost is irrelevant). 16 million for Moreno, tbh I would prefer he come in early get him bedded in and used to the manager and his teammates. 2-4 million is a negligible amount especially considering we have a history of dicking about over targets so we end up losing out:

Willian
Salah
Mkhitaryan
Konoplyanka

in the past year. Go back even farther and you can add the likes of Ronaldo, Alves and Silva..

Remy wasn't Suarez's replacement, he was an opportunity due to his buyout clause, we aren't proactive in the transfer market. We may not have deliberately left it to the 'last moment' but we arent the quickest in wrapping deals up unless we overpay, i.e. Lallana, Allen.

Regardless, the point remains, it was 100% known that he would leave if Barca/RM came in, the club should have been adressing the issue of him leaving at Christmas at the latest when he signed his new contract.
