No, I said if he was identified as the no 1 target then we should get him in early, the hold up the wasn't fee it was his knee (which would have been identified in the medical, so amount he would have cost is irrelevant). 16 million for Moreno, tbh I would prefer he come in early get him bedded in and used to the manager and his teammates. 2-4 million is a negligible amount especially considering we have a history of dicking about over targets so we end up losing out:

Willian
Salah
Mkhitaryan
Konoplyanka

in the past year. Go back even farther and you can add the likes of Ronaldo, Alves and Silva..

Remy wasn't Suarez's replacement, he was an opportunity due to his buyout clause, we aren't proactive in the transfer market. We may not have deliberately left it to the 'last moment' but we arent the quickest in wrapping deals up unless we overpay, i.e. Lallana, Allen.

Regardless, the point remains, it was 100% known that he would leave if Barca/RM came in, the club should have been adressing the issue of him leaving at Christmas at the latest when he signed his new contract.

Of course the hold up was the fee. Schalke were asking for £15-18m and we were only prepared to go to £10-12m because of the risk due to his knee injury.

And I'm sure everybody would have wanted Moreno in early but it's easy for us to say, it's not us spending the money nor are we accountable if it goes wrong. 6 weeks ago you had 4 or 5 big clubs in the market for a LB, Sevilla weren't in a hurry to deal and that's why they were asking for £20m. With the likes of Atletico, Spurs and Chelsea no longer in the market Sevilla are now prepared to play ball and it's being reported that the fee agreed is €17m + €2m (£13.5-15m). That's quite a saving.

I think the issue here is that you consider the club to be messing around if they don't simply pay whatever it takes to sign a player. We can't afford to waste money for 2 reasons. Firstly there's not a bottomless pit of cash for us to go out and sign a replacement when a signing doesn't work and secondly, when you make expensive mistakes you more often than not can't get rid of them and end up paying clubs to take them off your hands. Henry said from day one that we have to be smart with our money and make every £ count. Unless a certain player is considered absolutely vital by the manager then we're not going to see the club overspend.

You're right about Remy, he wasn't a Suarez replacement but that's because it's pretty clear that the clubs plan all along has been not to look for a direct replacement (probably because an attainable one doesn't exist). We're replacing Suarez by signing 3 or 4 players and improving the side as a whole, I think that's been clear all summer.

I am certain the club have a list of striker targets drawn up and they're working on signing one. Why it's not happened yet? I don't know but I'm sure there's a logical reason behind it.

Echo are reporting a fee of £16 million for Moreno. With papadpolopuswhotsit, we were offering 4 million lower because that's what we do, the knee had nowt to do with our low offer.

We've the reported 60million + sales and Suarez money this window, thats a rather substantial amount to spend. I'm all for getting value for money and with FSG keen to not make another Carroll I understand their approach, however not every deal with blow up like Andy Carroll, you cant let 1 mistake dictate your transfer strategy going forward.

Who are these 4 or 5 players to replace Suarez then? As the players we've signed so far were to bulk out a threadbare squad for a PL campaign and CL football, all the decent Liverpool journos have reported the spend so far was what was in the coffers. If we are signing that many in addition to those already signed then we are doing worse that I thought.

Sky reporting that Boro have agreed a deal to sign Adam Clayton from Huddersfield. If we can get him in I'll be very happy with our signings. Could still do with a right full back but not sure if the new guy Nsue can play there. I think our transfer dealings will have been perfect if we can get Vossen in too, he is keen to come but I don't see us splashing the cash on that one, they're asking for way more than we can afford.

I reckon we've got a decent squad this year and we've had a strong pre-season. I hope we get a good start at home on Saturday.

Think they are better off signing the U2 guitar player myself :D

Holding out for the fee you think represents fair value is sensible. Overpaying by 'just' £4m for four players could mean not being able to afford a £16m player. Those ~negligible overpayments~ soon add up.

And yet we've overpaid on Lallana by 4-7 million. 16-19 would have been a decent fee, but we've gone in at 23 million

Of course his injury was factored into our offer. Do you really think clubs value players simply on their ability? His age, fitness record, current ability, potential ability and possible resale value would all be taken into account when the club determine a value.

And £15m or £16m doesn't change much, either figure is still a fair bit less than what it would have took to sign him 6 weeks ago which is the point.

The talk was that we had £50-60m + sales to spend and once the Moreno deal goes through we'd have spent around £30m + sales, leaving us with £20m or so for a striker. As moses said, had we overpaid by £4m on a few of our earlier signings then we wouldn't have that £20m left. It's worth pointing out that I suspect the club may need to shift a few players out simply to cut the wage bill though as based on my quick calculations our wage bill has probably risen by £15m or so from last season before the Moreno and possible striker joining.

As for the players brought in to replace Suarez; Lallana and Markovic will go along way to replacing the creativity we've lost, we'll sign another striker to hopefully score some of the goals and then we've managed to improve our depth in midfield (as well as attack by signing the aforementioned players) and fullback areas.

and re Lallana, it's reported at £16m rising to £23m. We shouldn't have messed about and just paid the £25m cash Southampton were initially demanding though ;)

I was saying to Robbo last night that it speaks volumes that LVG looks to be shipping him out without even watching him kick a half-competitive ball.

Says it all really.

That's probably because he might be waiting for the majority of the season to actually see him kick a ball in a half-competitive way :)

There's no way we will sign Vidal (or strootman next year) if there's even a slight concern regarding dodgy knees, after making the mistake with Owen Hargreaves

Just going to post that :p Although his Wiki entry should say his last year was on loan at LFC. So many penalties in one season, no smoke without fire ;)

Really you missed the eto penalty and red card at the bridge and the arsenal cup game missed penalty as well. Not that i keep a record of it.:D:o
