Sounds like Vermaelan deal is off as Arsenal didnt want just cash but were after Smalling as well

Sounds like LvG is going to try for Benatia which appears a really good choice, might be hard to obtain though

Why would he want Smalling?! :o

I think like most very good players in Serie A - they're available at a price which is just the wrong side of reasonable but Benatia is a good defender so it's that old toss up between paying a little bit over the odds or signing somebody else of less quality for less money.

Yeah I would rather play Miguel than Smalling. Seems like a very odd deal there.

Linked to Sami K again, seems like Carlo wants him gone now, his wages seem to be the big stunbling block.

TBH we need a player like him, but I personally am not sure I want him.

I have seen harder biscuits.

Thomas Vermaelen: Arsenal agree £15m fee with Barcelona

Vermaelen was a target for Manchester United but they ended their interest after refusing Arsenal's demand to receive a player as part of the deal.

That's that, then.

Isn't the Benatia thing just made up by The Express? Pretty worthless.

Haha, Allegri: "I have spoken with Vidal, mainly about his physical condition. Things went well. It would be great if he were to stay at Juventus" :p

Looks like Christian Atsu is heading to Everton on a full season loan (link).

Will be good to see him in the premier league. Definitely one of the more promising prospects from Chelsea's coterie of young players.

Not sure missing out on Vermaelen is the worst thing in the world; for a central defender, he spends too much time injured. Definitely need someone, though. Blackett looks like he could step up if called, same with Keane, but lacking that authoritative figure who can also play out from the back. Still say midfield is the most pressing issue. If Vidal doesn't happen (ahem), and Strootman is locked down, De Jong would be a great stop-gap. He's still an improvement on Anderson and Fellaini and at least he has a specialist skill he's good at - maiming. For non-defensive midfielders, the other Herrera (of Mexico) had a great world cup and looked dynamic. Not top-top-drawer, but still a huge improvement on the aforementioned.

dunno why they let vidic go still could have done a job for 12 - 24 months...

Vidic didn't want to stay because he thought Moyes was staying.

Fiorentina's president has confirmed he's expecting offers for Cuadrado next week and Man Utd are supposed to be at the front of the queue (Barca have pulled out), £30-35m fee.

yeah. Inter's gain, sadly. would've been nice to squeeze another year out. i also didn't realise how bubbly a guy he was 'til he started giving all those interviews at the end. seems like a really nice guy.

PSG 1 up against Reims in Ligue 1...Zlatan scores.

Put it here as there was no european league thread, sure it will be created soon enough.

Most likely completely made-up but Hatem would be class under Martinez. It'd be grim seeing him play for them either on loan or fully transferred but I'd welcome him scoring and tearing it up against us, and then celebrating in Pardew's face as Suarez did to Moyes.

Sounds like both Chelsea and Man United are chasing Benatia. Could get interesting... United have the far greater need for a defender of his quality, but Chelsea are not short on money having made a profit from transfers so far (and also in January), and are looking for options to replace Terry.

If he can be prised from Madrid, I'd prefer to see Chelsea sign Varane though. Benatia is obviously the more complete player right now, but he will be expensive, both in transfer fee and wages, and at 27 he's in his prime will surely want to be first-choice CB from day one. I'd prefer to keep the Cahill-Terry partnership intact for one more season.

Arfa won't be good anywhere, major attitude problem. He's selfish as hell, thinks he's better than he is, lazy as hell. He needs to go to a bottom 8 team and get starts in either the no.10 role or maybe as a striker. He can't play wide against even slightly decent team where a wide player needs to defend. Sanchez gets back, but it's beneath Arfa... one gets games and to play for barca and Arsenal, one is benched from Newcastle, attitude is the biggest difference, not talent level(Sanchez is better but not hugely, the big difference is in being a professional). If he was given that more attacking central and less defensive role he might shine but ultimately his selfishness and frequently poor choices are still going to be a problem.

Last season 3 goals in 46 shots is very poor, in only 13 starts some of which he was subbed as early as half time, he shot a hell of a lot and only managed 12 on target. He also scored and assisted only against Palace, Sunderland, Fulham, Villa and Stoke. Year before it was QPR, Norwich, Villa, Fulham and one goal against Spurs, one assist against Pool, slightly better but not much, 44 shots only 12 on target 4 goals and 2 assists. Year before that, goals and assists against Blackburn, Bolton(both games), West brom, Fulham with again an assist against liverpool and a goal against a London team though this time Arsenal.

he can look exciting but has little end product and hurts the team in both directions, zero help offensively, gifts possession away frequently and often takes on a stupid chance rather than passing to someone more likely to score. At 27 I think it would be a minor miracle to find him massively change his ways, become a hard working player who would shine anywhere. He'll stay at Newcastle or go somewhere new, look crap 80% of the time, score a few cracking goals mostly against crap teams and no one will miss him when he doesn't play.
