Me & the family are going to Florida this Xmas. We have the Villa sorted and we need a method to send US dollars to the booking agent. They don't take PayPal and we really don not want to entertain the idea of Western Union(shudders) Credit Card will be good but its going to whack on another 5% on top of the price. To do a Bankers Draught will cost around £70.00 a time with our current bank.

I tried sending some cash to the US before xmas for something I bought on the bay and apparently they will not insure cash transactions at all. So I guess thats out of the question

Anyone have any experience of transfering money to the US ?. Which methods or services did you find best and at the lowest commision or transaction cost

The best transfer method which would give you the best balance of cost, time and safety would probably be a telegraphic transfer. You can normally do them over the phone with your bank. There is a fee involved; this will vary from bank to bank.

All you would need to do the transfer is the travel company’s bank details; bank name, address, account number and routing number (similar to our sort code).

Your booking agent is charging an additional 5% for a credit card transaction? You either have a nobody credit card or a nobody booking agent. One of them needs to be replaced.

The fee is applied regardless of the Credit Card Company. The bookign agent are realteively new to the US after relocating from England so I guess as a new business to the US they might be higher risk hence the higher handling fee.

Well, all businesses are charged for CC transactions, its just that a majority of them include it into their normal prices. If you tack on an additional 1% to all costs and 1 in 5 people use a CC, you haven't lost anything and nobody knows otherwise.

But for your immediate options, iBankAllDay has it spot on. Only your bank will charge you the fee (the bank receiving the money shouldn't), and it will definitely be the safest method.

I transfer money back and forth fairly regularly. I just get my bank to transfer it straight to my US account. Cost varies. The last time was about £40 IIRC, and it usually costs between £25 and £100, but that's for fairly large sums.

As for any other methods, I can't help. I take the route of least resistance and get my bank to do it.
