Hi all,

I booked flights for my travelling on sat. I leave for Bangkok on 30July and have a couple of questions

Here are my timescales, places and travel/ticket costs;

Thailand - 3 months
Australia - 2 months
New Zealand - 1 month
Fiji - 16 day
Los Angeles - 10 days
New York - 8 days

Flights £1,856.00
Visa £20.00
Oz travel ticket £350.00
Fiji travel ticket £350.00 (can take to £670 as it includes food and accom)
NZ travel ticket £350.00
USA travel ticket £700.00

Budget of £20 a day (food, drink, accomodation, travel)

I have been told the only visa needed is OZand thats £20 (unless getting working visas)

In Thailand i will need to get a flight, even if i dont use it, to show i am leaving to stay for the 12.5 weeks i will be there. Is it a 28 day visa, if so will i need to get 3 flights out of thailand or just internal flights?

Its a RTW ticket i booked. To change flights to a later date is there one set fee (e.g. £70) or £70 for each flight thereafter? -If i want to stay another week in oz for xmas

In a couple of weeks i will be booking an open bus ticket for OZ and NZ that takes you around the island with other travellers, for OZ this is cairns to melbourne. Fiji i will book a 12 day thing that includes food, travel and activities then add another couple of days. USA budget for something like this is £700 (not including food, or accom)

Is there any such ticket available to travel overland from bangkok to singapore or do i just sort of island hop for 3 months? I'm guessing the latter, so how much should i set aside for travel in thailand.

Doing the following I have worked out i will need around another £2000, I hope to get this working in thailand and oz by means of cash in hand. And/Or saving a bit more money before i leave... Centre parcs and Ibiza pending?!?

Thanks for any help/tips given

Budget of £20 a day?! You sure that'll work?

accom - £5, food £5, travel £5, beer £5

Some days will be less some will be more, this was going on a sta travel brochure. Mates have stayed in thailand and say for £5 you can stay in a really nice place. I'm more on the lines of an ok place near a beach (or the beach)

Yeah but would the US, Aus and NZ not off set the other places by a fair bit?

Thailand answers

28 day visa, you can do 3 visa runs... just get a train/bus to the border, cross over for 2 mins, then back into Thailand.

A budget of £20 a day is pretty low, even for Thailand.

You'll get basic hostel accommodation for that
Food again is cheap, but you'll be living off Pad Thai most of the time

Especially in Oz etc, you won't get by on £20 a day

Timewise, spend as much time as possible in Thailand, though island hopping is expensive.. all islands are a lot more expensive to stay/eat/do things on that mainland

tbh, you'll have a struggle with your budget, unless you can at least increase it by 50-100%, you'll spend too much time scrimping and saving that have a good time.

Get rid of the US leg, it's a boring country, you can do it when you're 60, and it'll give you more time and money to spend in the worth while places

A basic place by the beach will be fine for £5 a night IF you're sharing with 3 others.

Nowhere near enough for New York. Probably cost £15ish for the youth hostel alone.

Does anyone know the visa requirements to go to the US? Surely you must need something?

Think they just wave it for british. Or you fill it out on the plane

I cant afford £40 a day, I live on less than £15 a day in UK so i'm sure i can manage it in Thailand!

Then are you ready to go?
I put off my trip a few months till i had that bit extra, best decision i made, nothing worse than going on a trip of a lifetime only to have to cut it short because you've run out of money, OR can't do activities/stay anywhere half decent/eat good food because you're rushing it

just bare in mind, a beer is a quid.
a decent meal is still 4-5 quid
you can eat pad thai with chicken for £1.50, but you won't want to eat that all the time

any plans to scuba/bungee/jungle trek etc ?

£20 a day + flights some travel and tours so far comes to £7800. I'm going travelling, not to ibiza for a year

I've got to agreee with the others the 20 quid a day could be a bit tight, even in Thailand. I've been to Thailand 3 times and have stayed in back packing hostels. A fiver a day will certainly get you a roof over your head, but thats about it. I guess it all depends on your standards. Keep an eye of your stuff in these places as theft is rife.

The US has a visa waiver program for British citizens, so you just fill a form in on the plane. There are some restrictions, but assuming you don't plan to commit an act of terrorism or have been arrested for a serious offence, you'll be fine.

A £40 a day budget would increase travelling total costs to over 12K. Which isnt going to happen a bazillion years. I have known people to (say) they can travel for 10 months on 3k (again inc accom, travel etc)
