I have to say this news deeply saddened me, I have had the privilege of meeting Marcus and he's not only a superb cricketer but a very decent person as well.

He is in my mind one of the very best england players of the last decade, his contribution was always underrated in my opinion, not least in 2005 where his contribution in runs was second only to Pietersen for either side. I also had the fortune to be at the Oval when he scored 219 against south africa and I've seen few inning better.

He will be much missed by england but it's a great benefit for somerset fans who'll be able to watch all season and I'm sure it'll be very enjoyable.

So I guess, the best of luck to a faithful servant of english cricket...

Shame, but he doesnt seem to have the mental strength for the international or even professional game, a bit like Harmy:(

We haven't replaced him as far as I'm concerned, he was a great asset to our team and it's a real shame that he's had to retire from the international scene already.

Indeed, no replacement stands out. Carberry might be an option, he's not the same style of batsman as tres was but he's technically sound and scores freely. Joe Denly is a good batsman but he really is boycott reincarnate at times and could never open with Cook. Nick Compton might be an option, as might Will Jefferson, though he's getting on a little...

Can't say I've seen much of Denly but I had the feeling he was reasonably positive. Only seen small glimpses of him on cricinfo score cards though.

Has a first class strike rate of 62. Carberry has 51, Compton 46. Also seems like he has the best average just about.

Gutted .. Trescothick was a great player, tall, powerful, gave the ball a right smack .. brought physicality to the top of the order .. I will miss his biffing

He's a very distinctive player it has to be said, I remember him scoring a century (in south africa I think) while appearing to have his feet set in concrete, that he played so well with so little footwork astounds me...

One player I forgot to mention, couldn't for the life of me remember his name before.

Billy Godleman of Middlesex. Just turned 19 so was 18 last year was given a county contract at 17. Averaged 41 for the season. Pretty sure he opened a few times unless my memory's going. One to watch out for again this season.
