trip to amsterdam

stay at the flying pig hostel.

And find cheap flights, if your flexible on leaving dates you can probably get easy jet for absolutely dirt cheap.

Book flights with easyjet well in advance, the later flights during the day are cheapest.

Getting into Amsterdam from Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) is rediculously easy with the train station being right under the airport, just take the train into Amsterdam Central and you are sorted. Trains aren't too expensive either. If the station layout confuses you there is a help desk on the floor above the train station (you take steps / escalators down onto specific platforms) that, as far as I am aware, is always staffed. I have never seen it without attendants at any rate.

Once you are in there I can't really help you as I live and work out in Amersfoort so I don't know places to stay in Amsterdam, when and if I go I commute. Don't expect it to be cheap in terms of boozing either :), prices are very similar to UK prices once you change currency, depending on where you are drinking obviously. Some places will charge you a lot more than others. Weed is cheap though!

55 quid return including airport fees sounds about right.

No matter how cheap you try and do it, it's an expensive place to go :)
Isn't that the truth. I got charged 4 Euros for a can of coke, and 5 euros for a chocolate waffle, that's before beer and extras. I'd budget for £70 a day spending minimum.
Cheapest way is camping at camp zeeburg (http://www.campingzeeburg.nl/index.php?page=prices-and-reservations). Then get some cheap flights with easyjet/klm.
It's ok providing you don't need a good nights sleep. Always been quite noisy when I've been there, people playing music and shouting etc. Plus when the bar shuts you're kind of stuck whith nothing to do.

as said it is an expensive place

for transport use the train from the Station inside Schipol airport straight into Central station

cheapest flights we can find are around 55 quid return, does that sound about right?

Depending when you are flying sounds about right. But you should be able to get it cheaper. Easy jet always has offers on just keep looking at different dates/flight times. it can make a huge difference. For example flying out Thursday coming back Monday can knock a lot of money of.

When we went we spent £400 each in 4 days - £100 a day is EASILY done there.

Great great place though :)

Depends on what you want to do when you're there ;)

It's not what it used to be and the price have gone up a lot. I've been about 10 times now, not sure I'd go back tbh.

Spoiled by tourists (and sadly many are drunken British louts) from what I have seen.

Last time I went I was with Dutch friends and they avoid certain areas. The City itself is fantastic though.

It's is a great place, just too expesive now, and I've always been a bit disappointed at how early much of the city centre shuts.

Everyone has paid for sex in some way shape or form. Ever taken a girl out to dinner? bought her something? etc etc :p

We got stoned for a couple of days and tried out all the different restaurants. Some hilarious memorys from that trip :D

Really? In Amersfoort at least trading hours for high street stores seem longer, with most stores staying open till 6 or 7pm and various touristy places are open late as well. I've never been into Amsterdam to shop though :p, only to go sight seeing and for the odd night out.

I went for the drugs and hookers and never came back disappointed. Mind you, there's a bunch of bible bashers in government now, so it's probably a lot different these days. I do remember the beer being expensive, but who goes to Amsterdam to skimp?

If you're on a tight budget or you're looking to be a tightwad - then Amsterdam really isn't for you. Go elsewhere.

Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could in Amsterdam. The rld is just too damn weird.

Last time I had a pastry each comp with my bro. Had a good £30 worth each, then regretted it for about 20 mins before getting Chinese. Something about Amsterdam that just makes you hungry, can't work it out  :D
