Hi all, me and a group of friends, so far 5 of us, there may be more yet, are planning a trip to Akihabara (District Of Tokyo) To a year from Decembre, I know that gives us a lot of time yet, but we are trying to find the cheapest possible way of having this holiday, so far we have found it for:

£500 Flight
£12.50 Hostel (Per night)

We would be staying 1 or 2 weeks idealy.

Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get there, have our holiday etc? Thanks for any help!

Meh, we are happy being nerds, and we are proud being nerds :D Japan is exciting, and colourfull, and has strange toilets, and pods in the wall for sleeping in, who would not want to go!

Don't forget the Japanese hookers.

OK first off, I think you are kind of limiting yourself when you just want to spend time in Akihabara.....it's like saying "we just want to spend 2 weeks in Covent Garden" it's just a small area of Tokyo, which in itself is just a small area of Japan. You have 2 weeks, explore as much of Japan as you can, Kyoto and Osaka are just 2hrs away via the bullet train for example. Japan has a lot of things to offer and if you really want to experience Japan you need to see not just the "otaku" side of things.....Kyoto would be my ideal recommendation along side the high tech part of Japan.

On to more pragmatical things, capsule hotels cost roughly around 3,000 to 4,000 yen a night (£15 to £20...ish) Ryokans (traditional Japanese Inns, kind of like a British B&B in a way) cost a little more....

I'd recommend 2 websites

www.gendai.co.uk

this site is where I've found the cheapest airfares, and I think they can organize cheap accommodation for you too.

http://travel.rakuten.co.jp/en/

this site is useful for booking hotels cheaply....I use it all the time to book hotels for my business trips over here, for the most part the hotels that I book average around 6,000 yen a night and they are fairly comfortable...more so than a capsule hotel

At the end of the day......don't come over here with too many pre-conceptions...you will be disappointed....have fun, and make sure you try as many different foods as you can at least once.

Thanks, I will pose this to my friends, see what they think of traveling a bit more than just one place! The sites look good also, but still no flight cheaper than £500 Inc Tax :(

£500 seems to be the minimum for flights, my friend is heading there in september this year and he's booked his ticket at £490 something. You won't get it any cheaper unless some last minute deals shows up.

Absolutely get out of Tokyo. There's so much more to Japan than the capital. Get on the Shinkansen and travel down to Hiroshima. Absolutely astounding museums and I guarantee that none of you will come away unaffected by what you see there.

It's probably worth taking a day or two to visit that area (Hiroshima, Miyajima) and come back via Kobe, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto over the next few days.

It's been ten years since I was last there, but back then the cost of living was VERY high. I'm talking £5 for a loaf of bread, £25 for a standard breakfast at a hotel. Luckily I had the use of my godparent's flat whilst I was there (my godfather was the padre for the Seaman's Mission in Kobe but was visiting the UK when we went) so I didn't have to pay for any accommodation. We also had one of the employees from the mission show us around and translate for us. Probably the best three weeks holiday I have ever had.
