They seem to have the tech they just don't use it. When I was in Vegas you need picture ID every time.

Happens here too. One of my local shops was involved in CC cloning fraud! Luckily I never shopped there.

sorry that my holiday choice and spending arnt what you want.

i spent $1k on a mulberry hand bag for my fiancee and $900 on a macbook.

we also had a nice meal out every night, so $150 ish each time.

then the rest $1400 or what ever on tickets to get in places + buying stuff here and there.

we stayed in the w times square.

could have easily spent more but i was ill for the last 2 days of our trip.
 
So really you spent half what you said you did but also bought a laptop and a handbag. Buying a $1k handbag and a laptop are hardly typical spending costs of a 5 day citybreak are they!

i spent $4000, which is what i said i took.

the laptop was a semi planned purchase, the bag was bought because my fiancee saw it and liked it.

ive no idea how the op spends and can only advise on my personal experiences.

your typical spending costs on a 5 day city break are different to mine.

shall we just ignore all opinions/advice and always take yours in every thread?
 
i went to new york and did all the touristy things, and thought it was meh. my brother went with someone that had family over there and spent the time doing non touristy things and loved it. so my advice is spend atleast 1 day trying to do something that tourists dont do. find a local and ask what they recommend.

You specifically said that 2k wasn't enough and that you spent 4k implying that perhaps his budget wasn't high enough. In reality you blew half that on random stuff not even related to a holiday.

It's like me saying really you need £10k spending money to holiday in Benidorm because last time I went I found a car I wanted on Autotrader and bought online whilst out there :rolleyes:

Implying you need £4k for 5 days in New York serves no purpose but to confuse people and show everyone how rich you are. Macbooks and $1k handbags are not usual holiday purchases so are irrelevent to the poor guys thread really! By all means relay your experiences of money you spent on touristy stuff, meals, shows etc but beyond that just seems so pointless.

His budget is EASILY enough to enjoy New York, infact he could do it for far less if he wanted.

I have just come back from a two week holiday in Texas and it was fantastic. I applied for a Halifax Clarity (Mastercard) card a few months ago and using it was excellent. The card was accepted everywhere and everyone gave me back my credit card before I signed the receipt so my signature was never checked (not sure that was so good). Chip and PIN machines were visible in some of the shops and fuel stations that I visited but they didn't appear to get used very often.

My brother and American sister-in-law live in Texas and when they receive the bill at a restaurant, they just put their American Express card into the leather receipt holder and let the waiter or waitress walk off with the card. They told me that American Express will always side with them and refund any charges if their card did get cloned but I just didn't want any hassle so when I paid, I always walked up to the tills with the card so I could watch the waiter or waitress.

EDIT: Also, something to be aware of is that the price for practically everything is quoted without tax.

SO was mine.

Agree with the points about walking, best way to really get the feel of the place.

With the money, it is up to you. If you go off the beaten track you can eat well for less.

I would say that the view from the Top of the Rock is better, but I loved the inside of the ESB as well.

If you want to do the 9/11 memorial you need to book in advance.

I don't recommend going to New York unless you take around £400k because that is how much I spent on my 5 day trip there, please ignore that I purchased a flat whilst I was there.
 
im not spending all night on here i have better things to do.

us personally could have spent 5k if i wasnt ill and stuck in the hotel room for 2 days

if you like to shop then you will need a good chunk of money. op doesnt mention this, maybe your girlfriend is into fashion etc(mine was hence the hand bag and some other jewelry etc.) there are the obvious big department stores that you can easily spend a few $$$ in.

if you like to eat well you can spend quite a lot on tips over a 5 day trip alone.

getting into attractions can also cost $50,60,70 a time.


one thing i would defiantly say do, walk through central park before 10am.

dont walk around with your camera round your neck or you will get stopped on every corner for tour bus operators.

what's so Fascinating? , you still need to find where things are and the best way to get to places is.

I agree that being blocks its very easy not to get lost.
 
Hotel and Flights booked :D

Staying at the Hotel Chandler which is ranked #77 out of the total list on Trip Advisor which is good! Plus we upgraded to a Deluxe room for an extra £50 which isn't bad.

Managed to get Virgin Atlantic flights as well which was lucky as we thought we may have to go with Delta Airlines!
