Morning all,

Just got round to booking flights for me and the GF to Thailand for a couple of weeks and looks for ideas of where to go! We would like to spend a couple of days in Bangkok for the first few days then head south. We're looking for a beach based holiday with opportunities for interesting xcultural excursions, and also somewhere beautiful for me to 'pop the question'!

I'd be really greatful for any ideas. We're looking to do this on a reasonable budget, accommodation isn't going to be 5 star! I've heard so many great things about Thailand, but actually deciding where to go is a bit of a task, where's best at this time of year?

Thanks, Rob

Consider Koh-Chang, it is very nice and lots of different beach areas to explore, I stayed in several hotels there but Lonely Beach Siam Beach Resort Pool Villas and Kacha Resort stood out.
Check out http://iamkohchang.com/ it is a really good guide to the island.
You can fly to Trat airport for not much money from Bangkok airport in a twin prop plane and Trat airport is lovely.
As far as Bangkok goes I stayed in the Lebua State Tower which was very nice, I think i would maybe try Shangri La next time, have a look on http://www.latestays.com/ as they have some good deals on rooms
How about popping the question at the sanctuary of truth :-) do a google image search, amazing building.

I'd love to go myself, maybe in 2013, do you mind telling me how much flights cost you at this time of year

Don't want to rain on your parade but is Thailand not under threat of further severe flooding? Is that liable to be clear by the time you get there?

Hope it does and you have a good time.

I did this trip last year, albeit for four weeks. Flights cost us £600 each.

My experiences were that the weather was fine. It wasn't blazing hot, but it was a great winters break. What do you want to do? How busy do you want to be? Do you want to learn to dive? Do you want to climb? Do you want to see animals? Do you want to take drugs and get smashed? There is so much to see and do, help narrow it down a bit :p.

last I'd heard was they expect it to continue for the next 6 weeks, I'm not sure where is affected in relation to tourist destinations though.

Ko Phi Phi - thats where I proposed :)
Go around the other side of the island away from the main town.
You can also take a day trip to "the beach" as in the film from Ko Phi Phi.
I've heard Krabi has some good beaches but I've not been there myself

I'm off in January (3rd) for 16 days, starting with 4 night at the Lebua, can't wait. Then heading to Chiang Mai for 3 nights then heading to south somewhere undecided as yet.

That's the exact date I want to fly out :) Going to wait and see what happens with these floods first though.

Bangkok looks bad. One of the main airports is closed until November and tourists advised to leave.

Still Dec is a couple of months away so hope it goes fine for you,.

It's not a main airport, it's only for domestic flights. The international airport is unaffected and is too high up to be in danger.

It's only north of Bangkok that's affected, the tourist area is not and there's tones of places to go in Thailand besides the Capital, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Koh Pangan, etc.

Rather than flying down, you could do what I did which was to get an overnight bus. They're excellent, and you get food and drink :). And if I remember rightly, Bangkok to Krabi cost ~£2.50.

Did not know that about the airport.

Was only going on what I have heard and read and the belief that it is going to get worse.

Excellent suggestions thanks guys! Thoughts so far are to do an overnight train or flight south to Samui or the like. What's the cheapest ways to book this kind of transport?

Thanks rob
