Just set up a new i5 rig based on an Asrock Extreme 4 Gen3, and neither of my 2 SATA drives are being detected, when they were working just fine up until earlier this evening when I took the old rig apart! :(

I tried switching the settings round to ACHPI and IDE in the BIOS, I tried them on other SATA ports, using a different power cable, and using different SATA cables! My DVDRW works just fine, but my hard disks aren't and I'm not sure what else to do!

I cannot possibly believe that they both decided to pack it in at the same time, especially considering one's a lot newer than the other!

Tried resetting the CMOS? Using the jumper, or whatever method the Asrock board uses.

Try setting it to RAID. It's the same as AHCI and works just fine. Regardless of whether or not you do actual RAID any discs. It's also recommended by Intel IIRC.

That worked! Pushed the little clear CMOS button on the back panel and it detected them just fine! Spent 3 hours last night swapping round ports and cables for NOTHING! :(

Why did this happen? The reason I set it to AHCI in the first place was because the motherboard's manual told me to! And they worked just fine on both AHCI and IDE (in fact I'm not entierly sure what the difference is) in my old s775 C2D build, so why would this Asrock board throw a hissy fit and refuse to recognise them except in RAID, the ONE setting that I'm NOT supposed to use?

If this is a sign of things to come with this board I'm not gonna be happy, particularly since this is the most i've ever spent on a motherboard!

PS. Thanks Buchanan0204 :)

No worries. Glad it's working. AHCI & RAID allow NCQ (google it) and also hot swapping. The main reason I like it and use it. It also reportedly boosts speed on SSD drives.

RAID is fine to use. It offers the same advantages as AHCI. Don't worry about this.

P.S. I've never liked Asrock and I always get shot down in flames by members of the forum for slagging it. I've seen a few posts with people complaining. They are an off shot of Asus these days however. So... in theory... they should be... alright boards!

It's working anyway. That's the main thing.
